I made an unfair review before based on some super subjective issues I had. The author reached out to me to not only thank me for my lack of recommendation but offered to even help me make the changes to make it what I wanted (I had done this before but some of the newer changes would have taken a lot more time to revert/change). But I was not being honest with myself that I wouldn't recommend the romhack after I literally followed it for 2 years on the forum. It deserves recommendations even if its to use as a base for your own personal changes.

Hard Awakening

Hack of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX

Description:

This is essentially Master Quest for Link’s Awakening (DX). The dungeon maps are the same as in the original with different layouts, some minor modifications made to the overworld, some edited text for better or worse, and new uses for a few items not utilized in the original.

Apply the patch to a Link’s Awakening DX ROM and have at it.

Edit: v1.1 patch is here now. See the readme to know what has been changed.

06/12/13 update: v1.1 patch was mistakenly not implemented, but it’s here now.

A challenging breath of fresh air.

I haven’t been able to put this game down. The creators have gone through extreme lengths to make sure the player exhausts ALL options, obvious and not-so-obvious before continuing. Players will have to explore dungeons to a certain extent (until a new item is acquired), then return to the overworld with said item and clear a previously blocked passage. Then, they would have to find a new item which would allow them to progress further in the dungeon.

Every passage, every dungeon, every puzzle is brilliantly constructed and provides a real challenge into Link’s Awakening. Players will become very stumped at times, but taking a moment to carefully read into the clues left by the Owls will spark some inspiration for a workaround.

I’m three days into the game, and I’m still in the 2nd dungeon. I highly recommend any fan of the Game Boy Zelda games to give this one a spin. It’s a fresh new take on a classic, and all the things you thought you knew about Link’s Awakening and the island of Koholint will surprise you with its changes.
