Castlevania Chronicles Arrange Mode - Knockback Restoration

Hack of Castlevania Chronicles

Description:

Castlevania Chronicles is a remake and updated port of Akumajo Dracula X86000, originally released for the Sharp X86000. When Konami chose to localize the game for western fans for the PlayStation, bells and whistles were added in the form of Arrange Mode, which features updated sprites by Ayami Kojima, new music, and critically, a rebalanced difficulty. One of the things actually changed in Arrange Mode was a Castlevania staple: knockback. Essentially, when you’d get hit, you’d just hop in place, making it very weird to experience for anyone familiar with the original Castlevania games.

This hack enables knockback back into Arrange Mode by merely replicating the same effect found in Original Mode, so now players get all of the features that Arrange Mode offers with all of the traditional knockback. It obviously makes the game harder, but it makes it true to what Original Mode offers in terms of punishing the player for taking damage.

This has only been applied and tested on the NTSC version of the game.

Signed up just to thank this hack’s creator for putting the effort to share it. Original Castlevania Chronicles is way too punishing (and I finished Castlevania 1, 3 and Rondo) but no knockback in Arrange Mode feels weird and like cheating. Normal difficulty with knockback hits the sweet spot for this Classicvania hidden gem. Much appreciated!
