The past hasn't faded

Reviewed By: Red Soul on 08 May 2023

I’m a big Monster Hunter fan, but I’m also a latecomer, relatively speaking, and only retroactively got to know the classics (and they became my favorites).

Despite being the king of portable cooperative experiences, this now juggernaut had its humble beginnings on the world changing PS2 console, specifically the first two iterations, in which the incredibly popular and series defining Freedom PSP equivalents were based on.

This here is a lovingly crafted, perfectly presented translation of the second generation, with interesting and unique quirks that its console predecessor had (a different control scheme when compared to its more familiar portable counterparts, for starters) as well as particulars unique to itself, like continuous time flow during hunts and a cycle of seasons that changes many aspects of the experience.

The translation is incredibly polished and goes way above the usual bar, by translating even the online components of the game in such a way that they would work with both translated and untranslated versions equally.

People that started hunting on more modern entries like MH World or Rise would find difficulty enjoying this one, but if you are like me and prefer the Old World style, you can’t go wrong with this.
