Phantasy Star Generation: 4 - A Relocalization

Hack of Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium

Phantasy Star Generation:4 is both a relocalization and retranslation of the original English script and proper nouns (weapons, monsters, names, etc.)

  • Its primary goal: restore every mistranslated connection to the other PS games, to and ensure the main story & series themes best match the original Japanese.
  • Its secondary goal: make the game’s script more colloquial, fun, and emotional, from NPCs to key story moments.

Graphics/sound are unmodified from the original and final English release.

The readme has the basics, but also included is the annotated script & changelog, with additional picture & info on the project website.

There are three versions of the patch:

  • “Generation 4″ best matches the SEGA AGES English translations as well as the original Japanese PSIV, and has a few additional upgrades (vivify’s Proper Caser mod, some name changes, etc.).

This one is recommended for both new players and longtime PS fans. It includes lory1990’s Bugfix patch, as well.

  • The other two match the original SEGA Master System/Genesis/Mega Drive English translations in terms of classic enemy names, magic, etc.
  1. 1 has ALL CAPS and no bugfix patch to keep closest to the SMS/Gen/MD versions.
  2. 2 has ProperCaser applied as well as the bugfix patch.

More project info, screenshots, etc. at:

As SEGA canceled “Phantasy Star Generation:4″ many years ago, this project aimed to create a definitive, series-ending Phantasy Star experience that can also be better appreciated by new players.

New in Version 3.5

  • Fixed some dialog that got mixed up in the jail.
  • Editor got through entire script. Fixed many typos.
  • A few lines for better reading.

New in Version 3.21

  • Bugfix in 2nd TALK party conversation of the game, reintroduced from an old version.
  • “é” character added for “fiancé, fiancée, and protégé thanks to Squirrel2
  • A few more typos/linebreaks fixed. Hopefully a “final”, played-through-by-multiple-people patch will be available in the next month.

New in Version 3.1

  • Rewritten ending + text scroll speed matches music
  • Ton of typo fixes
  • Tons of new NPC dialog
  • Dezorian NPCs have their Phantasy Star canon dialect now
  • Revised ending text-speed scroll thanks to BGE and Squirrel2
  • Added project credits to ending thanks to BGE & Squirrel2
  • Added new lory bugfixes
  • Added asterisk (*), double quotes (“ “), and colon (:) to script thanks to Squirrel2

TO DO: Pretty much done! Need to replay whole game again to catch linebreaks/typos
