Final Fantasy III - Job System Improvement

Hack of Final Fantasy III

Description:

Final Fantasy III was the first game to introduce a Job System that allowed the player to change characters’ jobs at any point during the game. It brought us series standards such as the Dragoon, Summoner, and Geomancer. As the first try at a Job System it’s not bad, but it could be better.

Final Fantasy III relies heavily on forcing certain encounters to “require” jobs. At one point in the early game you have to rely entirely on magic for two rather difficult segments. If you had spent your time trying out different job combinations only to find out you now have to change every one again, you may find that you’ve used up all your Capacity Points (CP) and you have to grind more before you can continue.

Well, no longer! The Job System should be about freeing the player to explore interesting combinations. Square got into the groove with later games in the series. This hack aims to bring Final Fantasy III more in line with later FF games.

There are separate .ips files in the zip. But here’s what they all do:

  • Makes changing jobs cost 0 CP.
  • Removes the “Gained CP” message at the end of battle.
  • Removes the “# CP” window from the Main Menu and from the Job Menu.
  • Removes the CP Costs listed on the Job menu and shows the Job Skill Level instead.
  • Removes the “Removed” message shown when you remove a character’s equipment.
  • Automatically un-equips a character’s gear when you choose a new job.
  • Double-checks that their gear has been removed before switching their job. If your inventory was full you’ll get the standard “You must remove equipment…” message and your job won’t change.
  • Gets rid of the Yes/No prompt when choosing a job.

This hack is intended to be used with the Jackson/Corlett/SoM2Freak fan translation. Other translations may work; check out the Readme.txt file for more details.
