What's the wacky reason for needing a serial key again?
Are we not men?

Why is this hosted on Google Code, when it's not open source?

What's the wacky reason for needing a serial key again?

So the author can combine others' levels into his own hack (with said others' permission, of course). Completely ridiculous.

This "serial key" thing is seven different types of stupid. You could just openly ask for people to submit levels for your hack (or better yet, make your own, better levels).

I can't see any good coming of it except making your editor completely unusable when you no longer support it.

I would like to see a response before arms are taken up.
"Remember when we were in Japan? You said you were my gun, if you're the gun then that means I'm the bullet."

As far as conversation about the actual editor, here's a bug report for SmellyMoo:

If you start the program with a SML3 rom loaded, then load a SML2 rom, sprites won't re-enable until you restart the program.

Maybe you should post this on GoogleCode...

So does this editor use colored sprites?
Is it possible to play the game in color?
I remember Metroid had some kind of color hack.

SmellyMoo obviously spent a long time on this and is very proud of it.  And he probably should be.  However, the serial key is what's keeping me from trying it.  I can understand wanting some control over your prgram, but I think that if you really intended other people to use it, you should make it as easy as possible for them to do so.

When someone cracks it, I'll try it.

I guess I shouldn't be saying this, but you can get past the registration.

Start up moojelly, and before the serial key screen appears, quickly open and load a rom. The editor will then function perfectly, all you need to do is minimize the registration screen when it appears. Simple.

two thumbs down for the serial key lunacy.  i never thought i would see such prohibitive red tape as part of a level editor.

i tried it out thanks to nosignaldetected's post, and it seems very functional and full featured.  some operations such as the horizontal block fill are abnormally sluggish but it works in the end.  i can see it took a long time to put this together so good work with that.

well, I am very disappointed about the response to this release!

I will explain very simply, it takes maximum 10 seconds of your time to get a serial. I have spent over a thousand hours putting this together on my own. so get over yourselves.

The reason is simple, maybe 1 in a 1000 would actually email me a level afterward, this is the whole reason why I wrote the editor, as I want SML2B to be released, no one else was doing it, so I started, but I don't want to play a game that I know every last in and out of, so I thought I would just make the editor and compile the game once enough people had made a level.

but what ever, you lot have really put me off putting any more effort in and finishing it.

FYI, I was going to release the source code after SML2B was released, and also was going to change the serial to only be needed to patch the rom. but now I might just say F it.

ok, just so you guys giving me stick know, I am removing registration from Moojelly. there. you happy now?

new release will have no registration, which means no one will post me level mods, but what ever, you win.

think its completely unfair how you all have bitched about it, just a polite request would be been a lot more affective.

you aren't really capable of taking constructive criticism based on those replies.  users have posted why the feature is only making their potential experience worse and why it really shouldn't be there in the first place, it's hardly 'giving you stick'.  people would've sent their levels if they were interested in your request regardless of any serial key system, plus, without the serial key system you wouldn't be pushing away as many users.

it's an objectively bad feature for the users and there for a ridiculous reason.  if you want people to send you their levels, just ask politely as The Kins suggested.

You must not have been on the Internet very long if you think what occurred in this thread constitutes bitching. I thought the people were being extremely polite, I've seen fatwās issued against people for requiring registration of ROM hacking utilities. Most people see it as one step away from requiring payment for your utility and many see requiring payment as deserving of death. That may have not been your intention, but when 99% of people do something for a particular reason, you can't blame people for assuming the other 1% has the same reason in mind.
