Sorry for the false Bowser error message in 7-4... I used an Emulator EmuVT. On other emulators-this does not pop up, so this is my personal mistake. So sorry for the "pirated" error and misunderstanding.

I'm glad to hear it!

very strange, it seems the balance platform got confused and thought the crab was its brother   I fixed it by making the platform erase as soon as it goes off screen

Thanks, I found that one too and fixed it already

I'm almost ready to post an update, I keep finding little things I still wanna fix.  So here's an updated pic of the new castle colors to hold you over for a few days

I like this color scheme :-)

The barrels have become more graphonous and bright :-) And then I thought "this is the spirit$ of those barrels from SPECIAL". And then there are these walls... Excellent solution

"P.S. : by the way, I told about this hack to another news feed, some from a different community are surprised at how much progress has been made in the game. And someone still lives in dreams *to return the graphics from the hack of the old versions*"

Major improvement with the castle color scheme! Great stuff!

Can't wait to check it out! I've never played the originals (of Special of course) and I never will, so all of this will be new to me!

This is what you've all been waiting for

  Super Mario Bros.  Special - 35th Anniversary Edition v1.0

It's labeled version 1.0 so technically not a beta, but please post any bugs or issues you find and I'll sort them out before posting a full public release to the RHDN database

When reporting bugs/issues, please include screen shots so it's easier to track them down

Is it just me, or does the link not work? It takes me to a blank white page.

I get the same thing. If I right-click and "Save as" the zipfile that saves to my downloads folder has nothing in it. At this point though, I'm just going to wait for the updated patch.

Yeah I didn't want that old version spreading too far!  The new version has been uploaded to the queue here and should be available soon!  :woot!: :woot!: :woot!:

(ps please continue to let me know about bugs and I'll try to fix them, though my free time is starting to dry up again)

Cyneprepou4uk

So you have crashed the whole site because you didn't want an old version to spread? Nice move >:D

Was wondering, is the "Fix water bubble not showing" related to the drag force that pushes Mario downwards in holes of water levels?

Aside from that, fantastic!
I can't wait to make this update a permanent entry in my personal library.
I will surely give it a full go again :D

PS: Do you want me to send the PM after the hack has been accepted?

no, just the little circle bubble graphic that comes out of mario, it wasn't showing in version 1.0 due to a bug when I tried to change the max height it could go up to.  The "whirlpools" are disabled in this game

and sure shoot me a pm now if you like

edit: it's live.. go download!

Interestingly, the feature was redesigned with a color change. I didn't immediately understand what was going on, because I was already used to version 1.0, which changes the palette when the game is paused.

Finally, time for a full playthrough. I'm gonna go through it with the alternate NES palette to see if any bugs relating to it still remain. I should add that I'm playing on Mesen, v0.9.9.

- Upon getting to the end of a castle level, the palette completely bugs out, switching to the underground palette (it should be noted that I have a Fire Flower in this screenshot despite Mario's "normal" colors).

- The ending underground segment of 2-3 doesn't have the shadow on the HUD text.
- This might just be out of pure coincidence, but I didn't see a single Bullet Bill cannon fire at all during my playthrough, including an instance where I stayed on the same screen for several seconds.

Yikes that's a pretty bad one in the castles  ::)  looks like i put 0x1d when I shoulda put 0x1e.  As far as the text shadows on the NES palette, they are inconsistent and that's ok     Bullet bills seem to be working here

v1.2 in the queue now.. only change is the bowser color issue with the original palette

Not a bug, but I just realized that the Fireball / Trouble Bug sprite is from Donkey Kong and not Super Mario Bros. Special. Arguably the DK sprite is the better one, but they are different. I noticed because it was lacking the distinctive side eye from SMBS.

DK NES

SMBS X1

Baggins

Awesome, update., really digging the fixes with the 'warp zone' area in 1-2, and return of fireworks. Love the new more accurate X1 dungeon color scheme to.

Any chance you could make a version that brings back brighter red bricks in level 1 from X1 for example, or magenta tree platforms in Level 1-3 for example/? Is there anyway to make the enemies 'contrast' against with the dungeon/night background instead of fitting into the color scheme of the ground blocks (like in x1 version)? It's a unique look, and I've love to see that maintained as an option if possible.

Maybe add the 'red yellow / green yellow costume color schmeme from the X1 for mario and his fire flower upgrade as an optional patch?

Whats the feasibility of releasing a version of your updates that could be applied into Super Mario Bros 2 Lost Levels or All Night Nippon version (also based on SMB2's artwork), for level designers to create a custom Super Mario Special 2 style games (along with new Super Mario 2 Special)? As well as working with the new enemies, mechanics from Super Mario Bros 2 Lost Level for new level challenges (winds, upside down and red piranaha plants, poison mushrooms, ect + Special's powersups)?

Yes I thought the X1 looked ugly with the color choices and the sprite already designed for NES looked a lot better

Baggins, the colors at this point are pretty much done man, the NES and X1 are different machines with different color capabilities, you can't make them look exactly the same.  And the bricks are already red;  in "x1 mode" they're the same color as mario's clothes which are also red.  As far as merging the changes from lost levels, that sounds like a project for someone else... ;D

Looks like version 1.2 is already posted up on the site
