Chicken Knife

I'm excited to play this when you finish. I have a strong tendency to want to start at the very beginning of a series and work forward, and the lack of a finished translation for the second game has been the main obstacle in me wanting to commit to the whole SMT franchise.

That's my same case with SMT, bro.  I'm awaiting so much that translation.  Thanks to pennywise and Tom that dream will be reality soon  Those guys deserve so much of good in their lives.

Technically you can just play the remake, Kyuuyaku, on the SFC. It's translated, that's both the first and the second game. There are some differences here and there, but it's the exact same story/events. I will admit that I like the soundtrack and some visuals more in the original Famicom game though.

Yep, add me to the list of people who are looking forward to this translation for that particular reason.

Well, in regards in Megami Tensei II, Tom should be nearing the end of the game. Last time we talked, I believe he was at one of the last few towns in the game. Perhaps it will be released by the end of the year.

Incidentally, working on the game has shown me how much Shadow Brain(aishsha and I translated this years back) rips the game off. Still I had a lot of fun working on good ol' Shadow Brain.

Pennywise

Might as well do a year end bump.

Megami Tensei II is basically finished at this point, but will need to go undergo a few rounds of testing before release.

I will also be releasing a translation for a small GB game in the next few weeks. All the text is translated and basically hacked, but there are a bunch of graphics that need to be replaced, which will probably take some time.

I guess most of 2021 will be spent finishing old projects and bug fixing/updating released translations. My goal is to basically clear up more of my backlog of translations. Projects would include games such as:

Erika to Satoru no Yume Bouken - mostly hacked, just need a translation
Dragon Ball - basically translated, just needs to be hacked
Oni 2 - translated and hacked, but needs the finishing touches

Plus other small and random stuff I've tinkered with in the past.

Good luck with Dragon Ball NES. While it's okay, the translation was a bit of a nightmare from the other guy to get through.

If you're looking for another NES project, check out 100 Man Dollar Kid - Maboroshi no Teiou Hen (the Japanese version of Casino Kid).

The US version removed like 90% of the story. The Japanese version has a much meaty story with lots of various characters.

I just wanna say about Knightmare II. You weren't kidding, top tier title-screen. :)

I am really excited to play the original Megami Tensei II FC version.  It being a few months since the last update, might I trouble you to ask how things progress?

Pennywise

Megami Tensei II is finished. It even went through a full of round of testing to fix a bunch of issues. Anyhow, the plan is to release it with a translated manual, but we don't really have anyone at the moment for that. So, the patch will be released whenever the manual is finished.

Incidentally, my updated Ganbare Goemon 2 translation is in a similar situation. Well, not similar, but identical.

As for other projects, I have a nearly complete translation of Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu. I think once I finish that, I'll either work on Nekketsu Kouha Kunio or finally finish Oni II. Or maybe I'll finish a long gestating PCE project... I'll probably just finish Oni with a little Kunio on the side.

That's wonderful to hear!  Thank you for taking the time to update us all.

I very much look forward to Megami Tensei II, whenever it's done!

I can't wait for Megami Tensei 2 english patch to be released  :)

VegGameHead

Does your group already have scans of the Megami Tensei II original manual?

Pennywise

Yes, we've got the manual covered. I don't know when everything will be done, so lay your weary minds to rest and forget about it. One of these days the translation patch will go live.

I've been spending some time doing some GB hacking lately. I got around to basically finishing the rest of the hacking for Oni II and I think the translator is currently playing through the game.

Got another small little GB translation that's almost done and I'll probably revive my work on Destiny of an Emperor GB. I don't think I've touched that one in like 7 years. There's still a bunch of menu hacking to be done on that one.

mikeprado30

Hopefully Megami Tensei is coming soon.  Godspeed on the finishing of this undertaking, bros!

FCandChill recently blanked out the manual pages for MT2 for me, but I still need someone to typeset the translation in. If anyone would like to help with that, let me know.

A while back I told filler I would hack TM Network since I thought it would be an easy project to do. I should've made up some excuse and told him I couldn't help instead. It looked like an easy project, but when I actually looked at the game, I can see why no one volunteered to hack it.

Basically, the text is stored in 1 big scripting code block that uses embedded pointers to jump around to various offsets. It's only about 24kb of data, so it isn't unmanageable, just annoying. The game uses some coding trickery to get around bank limits and the pointers all reference offsets in the $0000-C000 range. I can still expand the ROM, but I'm not gonna bother messing with the pointers. I'll tack an extra bank on and have the game access up to $FFFF instead. The game also uses a pitiful dictionary compression, which I'll retool and expand so that I can get the translated script back in.

Anyhow, I'm currently playing the game and rebuilding the script as I go by manually adding the embedded pointer writes in the script. I'm probably ~ 1/10 of the way done so far. Whether the game will be worth the effort remains to be seen, but it at least looks promising.

Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun is pretty much done. Turns out, there's only like 6 lines of dialogue in the game to translate. I'll eventually get around to finishing that soon.

Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu is almost finished as well. I've reviewed and edited most of the text and just gotta check some end game stuff. I also broke the passwords by making some internal changes and I'm pretty sure I'll need to recode that part.

VegGameHead

Were you able to get someone to insert the manual text for MT2?
