Why didn't you just base the patch on the original unaltered rom?

Because when expanding an NES ROM, the last 16KB of PRG needs to stay last.
That would result in (at least) the last 16KB of PRG plus the entire CHR being included in the patch.

(basically, it'd be not much better than just posting a "pre-patched" ROM).

Ah. Why not just compress the hell out of the text?

Because that's a lot more work.  Coming up with a compression scheme, writing a compressor, then making a quick decompressor in-game, etc, etc.

Am I the only one that thinks this isn't such a bad idea for smaller ROMs?  I mean if the patch is just as big (or bigger) than the patched ROM would be -- why bother with it?

Yeah yeah "legal reasons" -- but that's a lot of BS since many patches contain copyrighted material anyway (like in this case -- the font is ripped right from CV3)

Well I tried the patch did the expansion with nfate first it patched the rom just right and everything worked fine. I used the Japan only rom there is another one called unlicensed that is an over dump if you used that one then you would have problems. I also tried out the old patch and I seen the difference between the two patches. The shops work in Gideon Zhi's translation. DarknessSavior's patch had lots of other stuff translated that the old patch didn't focus on. It mostly focused on the dialog and play ability. Don't take me wrong I like both translations. Keep up the good work both of you. However when I was playing this patch I avoided the shops got have way through the first battle hit end turn on the menu and the game froze up. I'll try it again when I get time. later.

Um, if I'm right, that "over dump" is a (probably unlicensed) Chinese translation from a (probably pirate) cart.

The shops work in Gideon Zhi's translation.

What? I wasn't aware that 1) I'd released any Fire Emblem related material, and 2) that I was working on the NES one :p

Yeah, you need to use the Japanese ROM, make sure you're not patching over the other translation. That's all I can think of.

And Me_Dave, the guy who did the other translation. His name is actually Dave, but the group is "Gaijin Translations". It wasn't Gideon...

I was going to ask if the original Fire Emblem wasn't already included verbatim in the second mainline Fire Emblem game, but then I remembered that that translation project was never actually completed.

Nah, there are a lot of differences. FE1's 25 chapters got compressed into 20 for the FE3 remake, removing a bunch of areas and characters. The FE3 version is a lot easier as well.

someday it seems like we'll all get to experience both fire emblem 1 and 3!  You hackers might not even realize, but you guys change the world.. without you guys America would have missed out on fire emblem 1-6! (not joking either).  I thank all romhackers and translators.. you guys are great, and I appreciate the work you guys do (as do many others)

Good lord. I haven't even thought about FE for a while.

It's on the backburner, but I'll get around to it, someday. Gid will probably complete his SNES FE before I do the NES one, though. XD
