Following on from the other topic about improved titles, only this time with hacks that totally change the game.
For example A Plumber For All Seasons:

A very polished ROM hack with lots of custom graphics but (most importantly) it still plays like Mario. Some of these edits have terrible level design or gimmicks that just aren't any fun.

Mario 64 Star Road is also very good:

In many ways these titles feel like expansions of the original, but better. Like Sonic Mania. Actually does anyone know any good Sonic 1 or 2 hacks that do the same? Good level design is a must. Another one that has just got my attention is:

SMK - Epic Racers

Will have to check this one out at some point as most other SMK edits feel off compared to the original track designs. What have you tried that you liked? Or whatever hacks you like that totally change the base game?

The Beaky Buccaneer

I have a number of favourites in this vein;

DKC Mania, which could easily just have been called "Donkey Kong Country 4" and been just fine!

Donkey Kong Country: Boss Blitz, which strips down Donkey Kong Country into a caravan-style boss-rush, complete with record-keeping.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Brigand Barrage, which does the same as the above, but for Donkey Kong Country 2.

Kirby's Halloween Adventure, which presents a whole new Halloween-themed Kirby game using Kirby's Adventure as a base.

Star Fox EX, which provides a new game under the humourous guise of the entire Star Fox franchise being under threat from other, bigger Nintendo franchises.

Sunlit's Star Fox Minihack, which is a short Star Fox 1-based hack that's a lot of fun, and sits somewhere between the official Star Fox Super Weekend Competition game and the above Star Fox EX hack in terms of length and vibe.

If you're looking for something that "totally changes the game", then that would have to be Big's Fishing Derby.

If that's not what you're looking for, then you're really going to need a more specific definition of "totally changes the game".  :P

Banjo-Kazooie - The Jiggies of Time is a really good and hard hack which features a lot of stuff from Zelda : Ocarina of Time as well as many new additions.

Zelda - Sealed Palace is a really excellent and challenging hack for Ocarina of Time.

Also, CTGP-7 is a mod for Mario Kart 7 which features 80 new tracks.

If you look around you might find a torrent with tons of Super Mario World hacks too.

Newer Super Mario Bros Wii is one of the best total-revision romhacks I've ever played. New levels... new world map... new powerups... it's excellent. Since it's on Riivolution, which live-patches the retail disc, you can play on a real Wii with 3 friends.

Also, even though it is an officially-released game, Power Blade for the NES is a total-conversion mod of the Japanese game Power Blazer. Of the two, Power Blade is the better game by far, and a must-play for NES enthusiasts. The sequel, Power Blade 2, is also excellent.

I remember reading a little bit about that in Chapter 8 of The Man Behind Captain Nintendo (a fascinating memoir penned by the first editor of the US' Nintendo Power magazine, who also went on to be part of converting Power Blazer into Power Blade, amongst other things). I need to get around to playing Power Blade sometime!
