Been playing with this off and on for a while now. I can edit and replace, I think, all of the text in the game now but since I'm not hacking any pointers some of the item names are slightly truncated still. It's something I want to look into eventually but it's not super high on my priority list.

This has been a really fun learning experience, when I started I had next to no idea what I was doing at all. I've been able to gain some familiarity with some of the file formats the Dreamcast uses, learned more about hex editing and sed scripts and just generally become more comfortable with the whole process in general.

I think the hardest part has been the translating itself, I don't have a real translator so my process has largely consisted of running stuff through machine translators, trying to understand what's being said, checking any bits of confusing text manually and trying to piece together cogent and meaningful conversations from the sometimes word-salad sometimes perfectly straightforward results and rewriting them in a way that feels natural and appropriate to the character. I'm still feeling things out and learning some of the nuances of the Japanese language (idioms, expressions, non or not-quite verbal sounds, etc...) so there's a bit of trial and error when it comes to that but again, I'm using this as a learning experience.

Anyway, I've been intermittently posting my progress on YouTube:

I haven't uploaded any videos in a while but if you'd like a look at some more recent progress you can play through to the end of the first real boss battle before it turns into gibberish:

Drop those files into an extracted copy of Vermilion Desert, overwrite the old ones and rebuild the whole thing with GDI Builder.

Feedback, tips, suggestions are all welcome.

Fantastic!
Can't wait to play it fully translated! :)

Please note Vermillion Desert use Nindows debug system, so it might be handy for testing!
Let me know if you need any help in enabling it.

Hello! I can help you by double checking the resulting text from the machine translation, and with the rewrites. Really love this game, used to play it years ago with friends.
