Question about Front Mission 1st (DS)

Despite the remake existing now, I frankly prefer the pixel look of the SNES/PS1/DS versions, but it always made me flabbergasted that the DS version has such a long pause before playing the battle animations, and that aspect is really offputting.

My theory is that this happens because maybe the DS version was ported directly from the PS1 version, but was this really the reason? I'm putting this question here to see if someone knows, as I'm curious about it. It's probably an unfixable quirk, but I'd be so, so happy if it can be alleviated somehow. Sadly I lack the technical know how to dig through the game and such.
