Update By: Fothsid

A complete translation of the PlayStation version of Shin Megami Tensei has been released. Fothsid worked on the hacking, Tom did the translation, and FlashPV edited the title screen graphics. The patch includes 100% translated in-game text and soft subtitles for a couple of FMVs.

We hope you enjoy it!

The SNES version is finally outdated! Once the only version you could play in English, it was ruined by a game-breaking bug the initial Aeon Genesis translation introduced (You had to download another patch for that). This PS1 re-release may not have the QoL improvements the GBA port has, but it sure as hell looks and sounds leagues better. I don't need to say anything else. 10/10 from me

Can someone explain what this series is about? I see that they also made Persona but I haven't played that. What do you do in the game? What genre is it?

Much like Persona, it's a JRPG set in modern Japan (or post-apocalyptic Japan) with an emphasis on summoning, fusing, and recruiting demons to your team. It largely differs from Persona in the following ways:
  • The first couple SMT games were very cyberpunk in nature (as were the early Devil Summoner games), while the Persona series has focused more on the high-school setting than the technology side
  • In SMT, you have your core team of human characters, as well as the demons you summon into battle. The demons are standalone characters, they are not part of your human party members
  • The core SMT games have always been dungeon crawlers. Depending on when you started playing Persona, Persona's 3-5 added elements of dating sims into the mix, and went for a more overt Saturday morning anime artstyle

In general, the Persona games are more streamlined RPGs compared to the Shin Megami Tensei games. Some of that has funneled back into SMT's IV and V, but it still remains largely true. If you like the Persona games for the occult stuff and want to focus more on demons and overarching stories about God vs Satan, you might like the SMT games. If you prefer all the demonology in the background and care more about the interactions between your core party, stick with Persona.

I feel like I need to clarify: the Persona series is a sub-series of SMT.

This is awesome! Is there any idea if this translation script will be used for the Mega CD version?

Cris1997XX

We don't know if people will tackle the Sega CD version, but...uhh, that one's kinda crap, and aside from the exclusive demons you aren't missing out on anything

Xhojn

Forgive my ignorance but why is it crap compared to the PSX version? I have a Mega CD but not a PSX which was why I was interested

In this location i have a freeze bug.

When i go to speak with soldier, and move out from this cell on map, game freeze and have this screen.

I play further, but now when i try to save on memory cart game freeze on loading screen.

I used patch ver.1.1, and play on latest version DuckStation emulator
