I'll never leave until I can finally hack Metroid.

Draken

Am I from the Old Guard or not? I'm not really sure lol

I remember in 2014 when DankPanties got banhammered into oblivion, does that count?

If you mean those likely to have seen https://datacrystal.romhacking.net/wiki/Fan_Translation_Community_History play out then for the earliest cutoffs then as regulars not so many either active, as the "I like to help others out" role or general comments but there might still be lurkers. Go to the very early 2000s and I have seen various names there appear every year or so. Don't think anybody there is active on Zophar's or some game specific site, though not impossible to find some on a general emulation site or audio emulation site as I don't tend to check those that often/pay much attention to the names going by.

I at the time might have played in peek and poke codes for my C64, used some cheats on my gameboy color, used some cheats on my megadrive, realised carmageddon sound files could be played by normal windows, ran a level editor and computer fayre mod disc thing for duke3d, fiddled with some basic code for said C64 stuff, played a poorly translated version of pokemon gold on an emulator and made some cheats on PC and N64. Would be several years before I took up anything resembling ROM hacking in earnest and thus don't even come close to old guard by those standards. At the same time it has been some 18 years now it looks like that I might have been able to wade into random ROMs and do some damage (though more like 15 since that was truly meaningful).

He means anyone who frequented The Whirlpool (The site and the message board).

The original database and such for this site was built directly on The Whirlpool's, which is why there are still reviews from people like me, Spinner 8 and (wraith) still lurking here for certain games, such as https://www.romhacking.net/translations/649/ (Which was written by me like 20 years ago).

Ahh, the ol' Attitude Barn. I only lurked on occasion. That place was something. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Hehe, yeah, I forgot to mention the IRC channel too: I remember someone posting this in there once (sl1me?) and for some reason I actually saved it to a text file I still have in my backups to this day:

(I censored out the curse words on the left so as not to offend delicate eyes)

It really freaks me out thinking how long ago all that was, now. Literally half my life ago! It's amazing how many games have been translated, and how good emulation in general even is now compared to that era.
