I'm currently looking into FF8(psx) and I found a bit of code I'd like to change. However, when I open disc 1 with CDMage, this is what I see:

How do I view the contents of FF8DISC1.IMG? I want to work with overlays, instead of editing the entire ROM. Which tool should I use?

You might be able to mount the IMG file itself onto a virtual drive in your pc.

Failing that, there is a program called jPSXdec which can browse some disc files.  I have not used jPSXdec personally so I can't help you there.

Ask on the Qhimm forums/discord, iirc that's a custom image file (basically an archive of every file in the game, many compressed).

AwesomeHairo

You edit the FF8DISC1.img itself. Some "files" (sections of the img file) are uncompressed like the kernel.bin, while others (unfortunately but understandably the dialogue files) are compressed and I think you need the lzs tool to uncompress them.

More information. Unfortunately, Colly has since been away from the community, and I'm currently working my way up to FF8 PSX (I'm working on FF3 NES now).

Code? Or you mean text?

I basically finished working on a translation project very few days ago, and I can confirm most of the files are very hidden in compressed form, there aren't programs to view everything.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that I would love to see everything you know about how to find files on the game disc, extract them, compress them, what they are, and their formats.
