As you know, Super Mario Bros. Crossover WAS a Flash game that, while mostly focused on Super Mario Bros., featured characters from The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Blaster Master, and Contra. But, no thanks to Adobe killing Flash on January 1st of 2021, the game is just dead in the water, as when you try to use the game's preloader in a non-browser Flash player, it crashes after going to a black screen (after the initial loading screen, that is). I hate to say it, but other than a sprite sheet of Mega Man and a page of unused sprites on TCRF, Super Mario Bros. Crossover was doomed to die after its final 3.1.21 version released in 2013. ExplodingRabbit, the company behind the game, doesn't even care, nor do they ever update their website. Let's face it: Our dreams of playing a non-Flash non-preloader version of the game aren't coming at all... :'(

Rest in Peace

Jay Pavlina (ExplodingRabbit) dedicated a good chunk of his life to make SMB Crossover happen and put it up on his webside for free, only to see Flash die and also he and his company basically got canceled after a failed kickstarter project. The dude must be exhausted and broken, I'm not surprised he hasn't updated the site or put up any videos in years.

Anyhow. It must be possible to play the game. Kosmic streamed it just a couple of weeks ago.

You can still play Super Mario Bros. Crossover 3, which is better in every way (massive improvements to the character roster, gameplay options, and graphical options from the first game). I believe you can just download the SWF file and load it into a .exe Flash Player on your computer.
Mega Man 7 > 3 > 2 > 9 > Wily Wars > 10 > V(GB) > 5 > 6 > 4 > Powered Up > 1 > The Power Fighters > The Power Battle > IV(GB) > III(GB) > II(GB) > Dr. Wily's Revenge(GB) > 8 > Mega Man and Bass > Mega Man (Game Gear) > Mega Man and Bass - Challengers from the Future

The game is already included in the Bluemaxima Flashpoint archive. I wouldn't know how well it plays, but I wouldn't expect any serious problems.

I remmeber that one. One of the earliest, nastiest little Kickstarter flameouts I can recall reading about.

Are you referring to that "final 3.1.21 version"?

I have the impression most ".exe Flash Players" don't work anymore either – except for something like the aforementioned Flashpoint. (Which is all one needs, really.)

I was under the impression that they released 3 separate versions of the game, but I could have just misunderstood.

I personally used SWF File Player with little to no issues. That's been a few months though, so maybe it's no longer supported.

Hey! I recently remembered SMBC existed and tried searching for it myself recently. I ended up finding this thread on reddit where a user created a standalone version with fullscreen and gamepad support: https://www.reddit.com/r/retrogaming/comments/ifeke7/super_mario_bros_crossover_dx_fangame_latest/

I figured I'd make an account here and let you all know, if anyone was interested. I loved playing this back in the day and I hope Jay is doing alright!

Sliver X

Adobe released something called the "Flash Content Debugger" alongside each version of Flash that had a standalone player included (And by standalone I mean a literal single file that requires no installation/registry access): This is what I've always used to play Flash games, and it works perfectly under Wine if you run Linux as well.

Not sure how hard it is to find on Adobe's actual site these days, but somebody has uploaded a copy of just the player to the Internet Archive, here:

I tried, but it quickly goes to a black screen after briefely showing the loading screen until flashplayer_32_sa.exe closes itself.

Are you nuts? My laptop holds 476 GB. Flashpoint is a whopping 766 GB (874 GB when extracted). My laptop can't stomach that many GB (especially since there's 61.6 GB of free space left on it).

Is there a different download link like Google Drive, etc.?

Huh, I just tried uploading it to google drive at it got taken down for "looking suspicious". Not sure why though, it's completely safe to download. I just requested a review, so if it comes back okay on google's end I'll post it again. Otherwise the link in that reddit post is safe.

You're thinking that the people behind Flashpoint expect everyone to download 766 GB to play individual Flash games, and you're asking if I'm nuts..?

Did you not see the entry for "Flashpoint 10.1 Infinity" at https://bluemaxima.org/flashpoint/downloads/ ?  (It's still a little big, but not obscenely so.)

I just overreacted to the overall file size of Flashpoint... I'm sorry... :-[

I was going to ask if there was a MEGA link in case Google doesn't accept your review. I don't trust MediaFire, though, because even with an ad blocker, it'll throw an ad for Opera your way when you try to download something.

UPDATE: I decided to download Flashpoint Infinite rather than Flashpoint Ultimate. Now I can breathe a sigh of relief knowing I'm able to play ExplodingRabbit's classic game long after Flash Player's death on January 1st, 2021.

Without a doubt, Super Mario Bros. Crossover is my favorite Flash Player game. That is why I propose a romhack to commemorate this classic game based on Super Mario Bros. (World).nes and that respects the gameplay of all the characters, and also that it is only 8 bits (namely, original Super Mario Bros. classic theme only, eligible characters within main character and music are NES only, and game mapping will be chosen between Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. Special, and Super Mario Bros. .: The Lost Levels, also the button configuration and full screen would be removed). Therefore, this hack will be based on version 3.1.21 of Super Mario Bros. Crossover.

Sir, there is already a very long thread full of ideas from people who have no awareness of technical restraints.

Other than Flashpoint, I would also suggest Ruffle to play games.

I still have the 2.0 version of the game, I wonder if this was the last update? :P

3.1.21 is the real last update. There would've been a 4.0 version that used OpenGL, but we haven't heard anything about it since 2019.
