Discussion for my various console and handheld game modding projects. View the full list.

For projects that have their own threads, please continue to discuss and report there. (You can also PM me about projects with or without dedicated threads.) I won't be upset or anything if something with a dedicated thread is brought up here, but I would prefer to keep conversations about them centralized in one place.

Is it possible to port the Breath of Fire text cleanup to the SNES version?

Looking forward to seeing what future projects you'll be working on either way

FlamePurge

I've thought about it. I'd probably only do it if someone made a patch for Cancel Button dashing, like BoFII Retranslated has. I know there are some patches for VWF in BoFI as well as a script expansion xkas hack by Gemini. It's totally feasible.

Really, what I'd like to do, or at least see happen, is BoFI Retranslated but nobody with the know-how has the interest.

I think the reason no one has any interest in retranslating BOF1 is because the original translation was very good and reasonably accurate. Couple that with the fact that BOF1 wasn't as popular as many other RPG's of the time and there we go.

FlamePurge

Apparently, it actually cut out wide swaths of dialogue to make everything fit. But yeah, the latter makes sense. I'm just surprised there are zero Japanese-speaking BoF fans who haven't ever even made a text-based translation. IDK.

Aww man, I was going to suggest a game nobody has ever translated. :'(

FlamePurge

Not like I'd be able to do it anyway. I don't know Japanese, lol.

By the way about Phantasy Star II, would you ever think about offering an alternative font like Mad-Dentist did in your hack?

That's not a bad idea. I'm not sure when I'd get to it, but I'm sure I could do something. I've been meaning to make some tweaks to the original font if nothing else, but I could probably plop in the PSIV menu font.

I was worried for a while that I'd have to port over PSII Improvement to Lory's latest disassembly, but I might be able to find a workaround and not need to do that... yet. :D

You could add "Secret of Mana: Relocalized" (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4324/) into your "Obsoleted by" list for Secret of Mana Proper-caser.

FlamePurge

thank you lan. secret of mana relocalized is included in turbo, last i recall.

This is correct. All those features were carried over to SOM Turbo.

Hi. I totally support cleaning up the text for SNES Breath of Fire. Like you, I'd only really want it if it also included a dash feature. I was able to find this thread that may help with that: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=29005.0
I have zero knowledge of rom hacking but would love to see this happen one day! Thank you for your awesome hacks over the years!

FlamePurge

Hi ainge. Thanks so much, but we tried it and it doesn't work. I have it on good authority that something may be in the works for BoFI SNES, but the group working on it aren't ready to talk about it yet.

So, since posting about "Phantasy Star: Classic-style Names" in the general PS hack thread is apperantly an off-topic post, Iam just going to bump this in the general thread instead:

In PSI, "First Food" is a mistranslation. It was supposed to be "Fast Food". See this for info on common translation problems, like the Vovel-R problem that leads to it being mistranslated: https://legendsoflocalization.com/the-problem-with-l-r-and-other-letters-in-japanese-translation/

FlamePurge

They were originally pharmacies in the Japanese version. In fact, they are pharmacies in SMS Power!'s official fan translation. There was no reference or mention of First Food or any other restaurant in the Japanese version. They were pharmacies. "First Food" was an invention of the localization team.

Your wish has been granted: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6611/
Also, why is BOF Text Cleanup discontinued already, when its replacement is for a different version? I am sure that there are people who want a BOF1 GBA improvement hack, but don't want to rely on a discontinued hack, or want some of the changes in the SNES patch, like swapping Shin and Debo, the new script, or uncensored Karn, without downloading a SNES ROM or buying a SNES cartridge and a SNES dumper.
