Hey krassh, I've only just seen your PMs, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but I'll reply here since it may be more helpful to others.
I did a translation patch for this game back in the early 00's. All of the text is baked into the executable, and I believe this is still the case today. The revamp wasn't a fundamental rewrite of the game, they just updated the assets to not look as dated.
The problem however is back in... 2011-ish they started encrypting the executable when they added GameGuard. I don't believe they use GameGuard anymore, but they still do some form of encryption so it's not possible to translate the strings anymore.
The other issue, is they've since released new versions of the file formats, and these file formats have some form of encryption / obfuscation applied (potentially just a XOR from looking at them), so whilst my SPR conversion code does still work for a few of the files, a lot of them are unreadable now, meaning even a graphics-only translation patch is no longer possible.
Up until recently I was working on an engine remake for the classic KDRO, but I've had a change of heart since I'd likely encounter massive legal issues if I released it. You can see some of that work here:https://youtu.be/IQH_LQ3vmFI?list=PLIyWrWGvJtrrt30zjTmYwMQzHGSViukDJhttps://youtu.be/7c6mpx60etk?list=PLIyWrWGvJtrrt30zjTmYwMQzHGSViukDJ
I may release the code on GitHub at some point, and I have also documented all of the classic KDRO file formats which I'll probably release soon too. Glad to know people are still interested in this game!
