Marmalade Boy SFC game (Hacking & ) Translating project
« on: July 29, 2021, 02:08:47 pm »
Hey there:

I am Bunkai, currently my main project is translating the marmalade boy games from Japanese to English.

With the sfc game I also want to start learning about the hacking parts to be more helpful than just translating in the future.

My intention here is to write a log with any improvement worth to mention.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be pretentious, I am a complete newbie and I am glad to ask or accept any help when provided (In fact during the last few days, I've been asking in the rhdn discord server)

A (beginner friendly) document with what I've done and a guide to do this is being uploaded to https://www.mediafire.com/file/1l5nd20vr4yv6f7/ (1.07MB as of aug/03/2021).
[It has screenshots and credits to anyone who helped or collaborated]

If you have any question related to this that I can answer, feel free to do it. (I'm usually at the discord and I may not login much, but I read the thread more often)

TL;DR: This thread is as the title says, about hacking and translating the Marmalade Boy SFC game.

Klarth made a png dump of the font.

A Gdrive folder is created to have everything organised and easy to access. It also has a walkthrought and the instruction manual screenshoted.

[Also created a discord to team communicate if needed]

Denim has a tool to extract/insert the font:
We have the japaneseFont.bin

I designed and created an englishFont.bin with yy-chr. And later created the English table file. [Needs update]

I haven't made much progress in the hacking side of the project but I just found what seems to be all the script text copied here:
http://ifs.nog.cc/k-z-y.hp.infoseek.co.jp/nikki/mamale.html
for those who want to take a look to have an idea of the size.

Besides I wanted to say, that, if someone happens to have the manual and could scanlate it, would be awesome. As it could help to understand more about it.
Never mind I found it in a video.

A brief update on the non hacking side, I have (in a folder):

Complete script ordered / copied (not by me) from an actual gameplay
Instruction manual (low but completely readable quality)

I made a private discord sever and a gdrive account for the project to be organised and accesible when/if it becomes a team effort.

Thanks for your project, I have always liked the translations of famicom and super famicom, which for cultural reasons never reached America and this game based on an anime classic will be more than interesting to play.

Since one of my ideas is to get it translated first to English and later to Spanish, I've already drawn the ñ in the font.

Details will be up in the future, but I think this was a nice way to say goodbye to 2021
