Awesome. Are you also aware of SixEngine, by William Kage? It's great if you want to build your own engine, but it is TONS of work, and is the thing most likely to sink the project before it starts. William is a great guy, and would probably jump that the opportunity to have someone help him put some polish on his engine.

You can find it here: https://www.sixengine.com/

A generic JRPG engine? Very cool. Plan to port it to something other than GBA, or set up a Patron/GoFundMe/whatever?
uh... ask me again in a year lol

There's a third option - besides hardcoding all engine features while having a minimalist scripting system, or having a minimalist game engine with a more powerful scripting system - modules/plugins. But that requires an API, doesn't it?
Some sort of module system did actually come to mind at one point. But I think the best way (for the use cases I can think of) might be to open source it and just make it easy to extend, and for pre-made "modules" do patches similar to suckless tools.

I was operating under the assumption that it would be closed source. That changes it completely. I really hope this works out.

Just to clarify once again, the game itself will be closed-source while the editor is planned to be open source (though this is ultimately up to YourNerdyJoe as that aspect of development is entirely his own creation).

You may get some takers on the various Final Fantasy GameFAQs boards. Glad to see this is coming along.
