Hello! My next translation project is a game about rainbows that's completely in monochrome - Rainbow Islands: Patty's Party for the Wonderswan!

Video of the game's introduction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Leq4mr4okSU

It's a platformer in the style of Bubble Bobble (which this game is a spin-off of), so it's largely playable as-is. But soon you'll be able to follow the intricate storyline and twists and turns of the plot in English!

Most of the hacking is done at this point - English font has been added in, maximum dialogue limits and free space have been increased, etc. All that's left is the translation itself. I hope to have the first release of this project sooner rather than later.

Looks pretty cool! I have a friend who will be interested in this, so I'm happy for his sake. Keep up the good work!
Mega Man 7 > 3 > 2 > 9 > Wily Wars > 10 > 5 > 6 > 4 > Powered Up > V(GB) > 1 > The Power Fighters > The Power Battle > IV(GB) > III(GB) > II(GB) > Dr. Wily's Revenge(GB) > 8 > Mega Man and Bass > Mega Man (Game Gear) > Mega Man and Bass - Challengers from the Future

USC

Supergamerguy: Awesome, glad to hear! I hope your friend enjoys the translation when it comes out.
(Also, I feel like I should defend Challenger from the Future's honor in your signature since I worked on that translation too... but I can't argue with that, haha)

Pennywise

Those screenshots are trading card shaped. Is that normal for the Wonderswan?

Bonesy

yes, i believe wonderswan has a vertical orientation as well as horizontal

USC

Pennywise and Bonesy: In a manner of speaking. There are two sets of buttons, but there's not a vertical "orientation" mode so much as the graphics are all stored with 90 degree rotation. The tile maps still go left to right, top to bottom... so editing them involves jumping 28 tiles each time you want to edit the next tile in line. :)
(Megaman & Bass: Challenger from the Future does this for its one vertical level too. Even uses a different rotated font, which threw me for a loop the first time I worked on it)

Hey, I loved that translation regardless of the game's quality. I'm glad I was able to experience it in English thanks, in part, to you!

(I still had fun with the game to some extent by the way)

Yes, games were designed for you to physically rotate the console while playing.
Though for emulation that requires an extra button.

There are two sets of four action buttons (known as the X1-4 and Y1-4 buttons). They were arranged so that one set of buttons can be used as the D-pad, and the others as action buttons.
I think emulators usually requiring mapping buttons separately for each mode, but maybe some emulator is smart enough to auto-detect and remap them automatically.

Turns out the menu speech balloons use a different pointer system, so I missed them when I originally exported the script. Got that fixed now, so I can work on those translations as well:

There's five islands in the game according to the data, and I'm currently completed the first one and the game over cutscene:

I think you may receive different cutscenes based on whether you've gotten all the gems or not though, so I'll be replaying it a few times before I move on.

Fantastic! I've always been curious about this game. Looking forward to playing it. Nice job!

Valkyrie

As a long-time fan of Bubble Bobble-lore within the series, this is quite a pleasant surprise to come across being made!!! Great work, can't wait to explore this thing-  :)

Though never expected to hear Patty is apprentice of  Bubby and Bobby, I just assumed they were friends from what I got out from the cutscenes I watched years ago.

Frogatr: Thanks! I've been busy lately so it's not going as fast as I'd like, but I'm trying to set a pace of one cutscene a day. There's a surprising amount of dialogue, haha!

Valkyrie: Glad to hear people are interested! The context is that Patty *claims* to be their apprentice, but Bubby and Bobby are just humoring her. The full opening cutscene establishes this more. The original Japanese line is:
"あたし は バビー と ボビー の 弟子なの!"

That's adorable! Bandai must had ton of fun imbuing their characteristic charm on their own Rainbow Island-protagonist~

This took way longer than I expected, but the first release of Rainbow Islands: Patty's Party is now available!
