Game Genie?

It's not unpopular either, I think most people want infinite continues, though you didn't specify which system.

I figured Game Genie would do that, but I feel like the hacks would be made for people who don't have Game Genie or games that don't support infinite continue features.

These type of hacks are made for old games (like starting at the NES era) that only give you a limited amount of continues. The reason why I think this idea is unpopular is because I feel like people would complain that it makes games too easy. I think infinite continues make games more accessible.

Hagane being heavily modified to become 'Super Ninja Gaiden' (a title that should have been released on SNES instead of that crap called Ninja Gaiden Trilogiy, they did not even modify the graphics as they did on the PC Engine);
It would change the title screen, some cutscenes, the player's sprite, scores etc, everything to make this game a new episode in the series. What do you think?

(Sorry for the poor mock-up):

It is not an unpopular, as in looked down upon, concept in the gaming world at large.

If it is unpopular as in volume of such hacks compared to other hacks a game might have, or relative to hacks in general, it is likely more because most go for infinite lives or assume people have savestates and thus don't need it.

Certainly there will be elitists out there but few care about them. I would mostly only expect to see such a thing made for those that want to play the game but also if using a continue resets your score/acquired powerups or something such that someone can play for score while others play for fun.

Some have speculated why a game might not have infinite continues. Some pondered whether it is a holdover from the arcade (which would have been the dev platform/where all the big boys played at the time). Some have pondered whether it was to give games staying power. I will leave that one be this time though.

For the record as well.
Game genie (at least as far as 8-16 bit era things are concerned)
A device which rewrites part of the ROM (usually by intercepting reads to it and sending its own back).
A game genie code can then be trivially patched into a ROM as said game genie code is literally the address of the part you care about and what needs to be there.
The game genies tended to have limited abilities to write RAM.

Action replay (also code breaker, gameshark and a few other things, if you speak to Chinese people they might call them goldfinger).
These primarily write to RAM, which tends to be where ammo/mana counts, lives, score, time, item counts,.... are stored.
They might have the option to alter one or two short things in the ROM, though these were mostly intended to bypass protections.
This is not trivial to automatically patch into the ROM on older systems. Newer ones with a bit more overhead (the GBA and DS are good examples) can have an additional thing automatically added to mimic the classic RAM writing device thing. A vaguely competent assembly hacker should have no problem porting a RAM cheat over; you either find the instruction/routine that uses this area and nerf it, or find a way to add a routine such that you basically do the RAM cheat thing again and it constantly writes a value to that area.

The names got a bit blurry as time went on and companies were bought and sold -- sometimes said companies would come back with save dumpers and editors, sometimes they would do region free, on the likes of the DS then the binary was loaded into RAM and thus a RAM cheat could alter things at a fundamental level... classically though and for most people around here the above distinction holds.

Other than that I already covered how to make a cheat to fiddle with the continues, and some shortcuts to make it a bit easier and some things that dodge the problems with it (if you only have three continues you can't do the braindead easy use one, search for lower, use one, search for lower... thing and expect to end up with a manageable list of results to go through).

But hold on, if you're hacking a game, how will you play it? Emulators generally do Game Genie codes, most flash carts do it too. If you want to make a bootleg copy then forget it... :)

My point is that if you're going to hack a game, you can't play it without using a system that would also give you the Game Genie. Unless there's something you know that I don't.

Also, quite a few games have cheats anyway. :)

I know this may sound like a stupid idea and reason for wanting a hack, but...

Have I ever told people that I enjoy playing Mega Man, but I absolutely hate Megaman X and zero? A big reason for that is because I absolutely hate X as a character. Let me just put it this way...

A big problem I have in the real world that I tried to get away from when playing video games is anti environmentalism, habitat destruction, animal cruelty and other forms of zoosadism. I also generally prefer not playing as humans in video game for this reason mostly. Despite that, I do not dislike Mega Man as a character. The fact that he fights alongside a robot dog, robot bird and robot cat tells me that he has consideration for life other than humans. It also helps that the vast majority of villains are other robot humans much like Megaman.

Mega Man X, on the other hand, is a zoo sadistic Eco Nazi. His enemies are mostly animals and he hasn't shown any consideration towards any creature other than humans. Playing his game towards the end would basically mean ensuring that this guy succeeds in his goals, and from what I can tell, his goals are pretty much only to save humans and to f*** with all other life.

Honestly, fixing this wouldn't be hard. Just change Mega Man X to look like a different creature. If he look like a cat or a dog or a sloth or, really, ANYTHING but a human, I would not be reminded so heavily of the reasons I play video games to get away from. Besides myself, a hack like this would also it appeal to furries. If you changed the levels as well, which wouldn't be that hard since there are programs, you could broaden the appeal even further.

Long story short, I'd love to see a hack of the Mega Man X Games that changes X from a human to an animal.

Edit: from what I can tell, Mega Man X's Sprites do not require extraction, and can simply be edited with tile molester or a similar program.

I always like the idea of more Ninja Gaiden... The SNES trilogy was certainly garbage. I haven't played Hagane, but the guy looks overpowered compared to Ryu. He would probably have to be slowed down, have fewer attacks or otherwise be handicapped to keep the right feel. But I would be happy to play it.

You could replace X with Rush(who never actually appeared in the X series):

Aren't all the Classic series characters supposed to be dead by the X timeline?

...

Just a reminder that in Rockman & Forte (Mega Man & Bass), in order to progress through the game, Proto Man suggests that you and you are required to use Burner Man's weapon to BURN DOWN AN ENTIRE FOREST.

that is probably what would make the most sense, plus he has existing sprites that might not be too hard to splice.

Banjo-Kazooie (N64): A hack that will remove the requirement to collect each world's 100 musical notes in a single life or run like they did in the Xbox 360 port.

Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64): A hack that will restore all the content that Nintendo forced Rare to remove back to the game.

Super Punch-Out!! (SNES) A hack that will restore the beta sprites of the main protagonist.

Crash Team Racing (PSX): A hack that will add all the fixes from the PAL version to the American version.

Nightmare Creatures (PSX): A hack that will give you the choice of turning off the health-depleting adrenaline meter in the options menu like you can in the N64 port.

Quake II (PSX): A hack that will replace the entire soundtrack with the one from the N64 port.

TMNT IV (SNES): A hack that will change some of Krang's sprites to make him look more like his arcade counterpart:
(Neon Night Riders)
SNES:

Replace them with these:

(Starbase)
SNES:

Replace them with these:

Add this to his destroyed ship:

Including add Super Shredder's falling sprite from Hyperstone Heist as well:

Including change the colors in this game to make it look more like its arcade counterpart as well.

I'd also like a Banjo Kazooie hack that lowers the required collection quotas to about 50-60%.

Haha haha ha! "I'm not a furry but it would be cool if we had this furry sprite hack... for furries."
Now you're playing in... three dimensions.

<_<

I already explained my big reason for wanting the hack, and it's not because I'm a furry.

I had an idea for a Dragon Quest 9 hack

what if the player's boring custom character got replaced with one of the heroes from previous games?
they have 3D models, unlike most NPCs so it would just be a matter of replacing it
maybe this could be done as a cheat, like for R4 and stuff?

mamertos

More enemies in Mega Man X2's stages (SNES) since all them feel lack of enemies (volcano stage, water stage...).

I'd love to see an English translation of Super Famicom's Ranma Nibunnoichi: Chougi Rambuhen. While the game can be played ignoring the Japanese text it would be cool to be able to read the stories for each character (presented as frame cards between matches).

KingMike

I thought Dynamic-Designs already did that one.
Or maybe somebody else.

We don't have a less embarrassing translation of the one that became Street Combat.

Are you talking about this one?
