I was curious about the system when I used to be in the shelter system, it arrived today. I wish the controllers were Dual Shock controllers, and the games coulda been better.

I'm pretty sure you can hack this system to put ROMS in it, I'd love to put my NES, SNES, GB/GBA, Genesis and TG16 ROMS on the system, is it even possible? Another question I wanna ask is, would there be a way to play PS1 ISO files through a 1TB USB drive? I saw one on Amazon for $40 and I have almost 200GB of PS1 games.

I don't wanna feel buyer's remorse, and tips you fellas can gimme I'd really appreciate it.

You can hack it with a better emulator and NTSC isos, go for that. If you got it cheap its worth it for the look alone.

I have a hacked PS1 classic, and I would not recommend a 1TB drive. I use two 64gb drives, one for PS1 games working with the default emulator and one for other roms, like Arcade, PSP, DS, Sega CD, and Turbografx CD roms. I recommend a powered USB extender if you want to use a decently large drive and still have room for more than one controller (ideally the extender would plug into the second USB port and have 4 extra USB ports for a drive and one other controller).

I would also recommend using the latest version of Autobleem on your USB drives. This allows you to "hack" your PS1 classic without ever permanently modifying the classic itself. It comes with built in Retroarch for all your gaming needs as well as the option to play more PS1 roms with the built in emulator.

If you're really looking for an optimal experience, you can also buy the $20 PS1 Wireless adapter from 8bitdo to play with other wireless controllers (I think autobleem allows you to play with other wired USB controllers if you want to do that instead).

I didn't know you could hack a PlayStation Classic. Hopefully, ROM Hacks like a modified NTSC-U iso of Monster Rancher 2 using both of STARWIN's patches and fan translations like for the NTSC-J release of Dr. Slump can work on the PSC as well...

I've got a couple of Samsung Fit 256gb drives that work just fine on the PSC.  Yeah look into Autobleem or Project Eris as your hack, get an OTG adapter or USB hub.

i dont know why people were complaining about it not having a dualshock, the PS1 debuted in 1994 in Japan and late 1995 in North America with the standard controllers. In fact, dualshocks weren't bundled until 1998 during the tail end of it's lifespan and it was still regarded as a optional peripheral.

i've seen so many influencers complain about that, even one from the LJN defender who make videos defending crappy LJN games complained about it, then in that same video he shows a photo of him from 1997 holding a PS1 box that had the standard PS1 controllers.

besides, the Sega Genesis Mini or Turbografx mini didnt include 6 button controllers yet these same influencers rave about that. I even remember fans commenting about the turbografx classic how they wouldnt want 2 controller ports because it wouldnt be accurate to the original. So why woud they include Dualshocks when that won't go with the theme of the classic PlayStation? And there's only 1 game that requires a dualshock and that's Ape Escape.

Out of all the Mini consoles, the PS1 is the best one and gives u the most bang for your buck. It comes with two USB controllers that can be used on your PC or raspberry pi. It comes with 16gb of internal storage that you can modify and swap your own games with, it has two USB ports that let you insert USB drives and other peripherals such as a mouse, keyboard, wifi adapter, optical CDrom drive, it requires hacking though.

It's also the most powerful out of all the minis. it doesn't even requiring modifying. There's a Autobleem method that is plug and play, you just need to extract the contents onto a USB and it'll work when you insert it into the PSC controller port.

I haven't been following the story very closely, but I remember when it was first released, some people were showing that the NES/SNES classic could run a PSX emulator at a better frame rate than the PSX Classic. But I suppose there have been substantial optimizations since then?

Some people claim that the snes classic can play Ps1 games better than the psc because back then the nesc and Snesc were already 2 years in and had retroarch available.

When the psc came out, it had the built in pcsx emulator which was a older version. The main issue people had were the frame rates is that Sony included 9 PAL games which ran at 50hz because Pal regions had different specifications when it comes to broadcasting stuff on tv. Even up until 2010, most USA music videos and films were slowed down slightly when aired on Europe tv.

Sony probably tried to cater to both US and EU users by including half and half instead of releasing a Europe version with only PAL games.

I think the whole 50fps vs 60fps is a bit over exaggerated. yeah PAL games are slightly slower but I doubt most will even notice until someone point it out to them. Though they should have made it all NTSC Though.

As for which emulator perform better, the built in pcsx or the other cores meant for retroarch, there’s really not much difference and some users prefer the built in emu, and there were some games that only work properly with the built in pcsx.

Both the snesc and psc use retroarch cores. Early on like within the first 3 weeks there was a lolhak that came out which let people load their own Ps1 games. Then about a month later there were a retroarch port called retroboot and soon afterward there were Bleemsync which evolved from lolhak and eventually became Project Eris, and a totally separate project called Autobleem which was design to simplify the process and not modify anything internally.

People forget that the nesc and snesc took years to evolve. It wasn’t until 2018 over a year into development when they could load anything above 230mb. And it wasn’t until 2021 when the hakchi team even had a way to dump your snesc usb games into your pc.

If someone had a snesc usb without the hakchi folder, which was like a iTunes type syncing desktop app where if u put 60gb with of data into a usb then it’ll store that 60gb on your desktop too and if u delete it then you’re assed out.

But the psc everything was stored on the usb, u don’t have to do no holding the reset and some other combination to enable transferring via a usb cable. And the psc was exploitable within like the first few weeks. And everybody already expecting it to be this powerhouse emulation machine when not even the rpi4 moved that fast.

And speaking of which, at the time late 2018 the psc was even more powerful that the rpi3b+ which was available at the time.

U had people saying to get a rpi 3b+ instead, even video of people adding a rpi3 into the psc. Well let’s look at the comparison, they complain about the psc titles yet they suggest getting a rpi which had zero games, zero storage, zero controllers, no cables or none of that stuff and if u do get a case, heatsink, sd card, controllers it would cost over 100$ and still come with no games.

So people have a tendency to parrot what others say and go along with the Crowd. I was thinking of making a parody video of these YouTube influencers who trash the psc then immediately fawn over the genesis and tg16 mini.

My idea was to give this stank ass look when unboxing the psc, how it’s missing a dual shock and how it’s inexcusable. Then after ward unopen a genesis mini and be overly enthusiastic and say shit like, yeah it doesn’t come with a six button controller but who needs that when u can play Street Fighter II with 3 buttons and do all that fake infomercial ass presentation they do.

But I’m jus saying ppl needa be careful with just parroting what the popular opinion is because this style of thinking can be weaponized if it’s that easy to shape someone’s thinking where they act ashamed to have purchased a psc.

For years I watch nba jam te comparison videos and all of them say the Saturn ver is better and for years I assumed it was true I mean I’m seeing it in comments, message boards, videos etc. that is until I played it myself and realize the Saturn version is missing a ton of effects and features that the psx ver had.

Oh and let me just say the snesc doesn’t come with USB ports so playing Ps1 games with a snesc controller is missing L2 and r3 buttons which is needed for games like ff8 when u have to escape some scenes. And even if u do get a 8bitdo receiver u would have to flash the firmware with a custom one to get the l2 and R2 buttons working.

Don’t get me wrong though I love the Snes classic and it has the best interface, even when u leave it idling it’ll start to play your previous save states. That’s something I wish emulation station or other front ends have. For retro emulation it’s a great device. But it’s not more versatile or more powerful than a psc

Personally I would have preferred they add some 2d street fighter games but I believe many 2d fighters and rhythm games like parappa the rapper have too much input delay on modern tvs so it wouldnt have been playable for most

Not saying it was ALL bad game choices but Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six PAL version is still the posterchild of "who the hell was asking for this game to be included?"
And it's a license game, which makes it even that much stranger.

It's probably not far off from the truth when people joked about the game selection "it's the games Sony could find before Nintendo shut down the ROM sites".

Not paying Activision (who I believe is the current publishing rights holder) what it'd take to get a single Crash or Spyro game is a miss, considering those were the console's rented mascots.

I wouldn't say 1998 is the "tail end" of PS1's lifespan either, regarding people expecting DualShock. PS1 was popular enough that the console was still being made, and new (as in sealed) games still sold in stores until well into 2004.
I know because the PS2 I got for Christmas in 2003 was my first Sony console and I was buying those games.

from my recollection, dualshocks were released as a peripheral first in around march 98 for games like Ape Escape. Then around Christmas 98 they started bundling it. Around 1999 there was hype for the Dreamcast and even word of the PS2, but yeah i remember capcom re-release resident evil 2 in Nov 98 to make a Dualshock version.

speaking of the vibration feature, that felt kinda like a gimmick. i mean square experimented with it in FF8, then in FF9 they remove that feature. or they greatly minimized it because i dont recall it being used. then of course Sony got that lawsuit going on and they remove the vibration feature entirely for the PS2 and PS3.

But yeah 1999 was when the Dualshocks became mainstay but even then i dont recall it being overly used that much. Tony Hawk Pro Skater came out in sept 1999 and that didnt utilize it.

hell i prefer the standard dpads actually, probably cuz my favorite genre is fighting games and u need the dpad to be real precise. and the standard dpad is very lightweight and i still used it for the ps2 and ps3. Even MD luffy won a major street fighter EVO tournament with the standard non-analog ps1 controller.

and with games like tekken 3, theres moves like jins somersault flip where u gotta slide your fingers across the X to the circle buttons and the right analog is a bit of a hindrance. Those pressure sensitive trigger buttons aren’t needed in fighting games either.

the standard dpad is versatile and at least it has L2/R2 buttons. Them other mini consoles are lacking buttons but everybody wanna swear by them. then some people say they dont like shoulder buttons for street fighter and say that the saturn 6 buttons is better

i was looking at the PS1 controller and I was wondering why the buttons were placed like that and I realize the positioning of it makes it possible to press certain button combinations such as square+circle and cross+triangle easier. Some games like Tekken and soul edge use these button combinations.

When I look at the Sega genesis, 3DO, Saturn, jaguar, turbografx controller, or even handheld devices like the game.com, the button are more positioned diagonally without an angle.

Even 6 button controllers like capcom’s street fighter pads for the Xbox and ps3 are like that too. that makes it difficult to link jabs with fierce combos unless you position your fingers like a Arcade stick layout.

I know it’s more about preferences but the way the PlayStation controllers are laid out, u can easily combine multiple button combinations like square+r1, triangle+r2. Imagine using those 6 button pads where the trigger buttons are placed with the other 4 buttons, how hard it’ll be to press both square and r2.

anyway just my thoughts. i have a theory for why crash or spyro wasn't included, i may or may not be right but around that time there were these Trilogy compilations of Crash and Spyro being released so maybe whoever own those IPs didnt want it to be included in the PSC. just a guess.

The Dual Shock lawsuit happened around 2005 or so. PS2 definitely had vibration. I can remember playing FFX and during one of the Sin cutscenes, just feeling how gimmicky the lengthy full-blast vibration felt. It was the PS3 when Sony removed it and tried to cover it up claiming people didn't want it anyways.

A little late to the party myself, but just wanted to add my two cents on some of this stuff.

1 TB is *way* overkill for a PS Classic. I have a curated collection of backups for NES/SNES/MD-G/GB/GBC/GG along with the 3D dawn era consoles with N64/PSX/Saturn/PS2/DC/GC, along with a smattering of other obscure/smaller consoles that have relatively small libraries like Wonderswan, PC-Engine and 3DO. I went out of my way to comb through every list of games for said consoles and add any games that I'm interested in playing or that are historically well-liked and iconic titles for their systems, along with tons of fan translations. The whole collection totals out to 1.35 terabytes. Considering you won't be playing Gamecube games on the PS Classic, that cuts out about 200 gigs right there, and my PSX collection has 470 titles, many of which I picked for personal interest and nostalgia that a lot of people probably wouldn't be dying to play or keep handy on PS Classic, that's another 50-70 gigs you can probably not worry about. PSP titles could probably take up a damn good bit of space, but again, there are some real bangers there, but my collection is a little inflated by downloading basically every RPG on the system to at least try out, along with some titles that are in said collection specifically to complete a series of titles, like Sonic Rivals, Phantasy Star Portable, Tenchu, and Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble. Things that I'd have a personal interest in playing, but might not exactly be knockout hits or must-haves for everyone. For all of the classic system collections up to N64 and excluding PSX, it totals out to just under 49 gigs for *everything*, and that's well over 2000 titles across all systems which is, needless to say, a ludicrous number of titles.

PSX, PSP and DC would take up a significant amount more space (I'm sitting at around 306 gigs compressed for 700 titles combined), but as I said, I also have a slightly inflated collection for personal tastes/interests and some titles simply for posterity and because I want to at least try them out at a later date. You might want to invest in a slightly larger hard drive to accommodate your own personal collection there, but even then, I think snagging something in the 512 gb range should be more than ample to contain as many games from the 3D consoles it will play along with a sizeable chunk of classic games. If you plan to only load a small handful rather than a collection of thousands of games like I have, then you won't need to go anywhere near that size. If you can get a good deal on a 512 though, there's no reason *not* to really, when you could just keep throwing games on it as you find more you're interested in playing. Better too much than not enough.

As far as performance on SNES Classic vs. PS Classic, that I can't really say much on because I haven't really compared the two, but I *do* know that a couple years ago someone found a way to vastly improve the performance of PSX games on SNES Classic by realizing that the PSP Popstation emulator for PSX had a unique BIOS bundled in with it that was different from any of the actual PSX systems, and was optimized to improve performance of PSX games on PSP, which had less power. They dumped this BIOS and plugged it into the SNES Classic's PSX emulator and went from severe slowdown on Einhander when there were a lot of enemies and bullets on screen to buttery smooth performance. I'd wager that it would have a similar impact on the PS Classic, and I personally use it in retroarch on my Switch and it had a noticeable impact on PSX performance as well. It's basically an official Sony emulation BIOS, so tracking that down might do some good for any games that have a little slowdown/stutter. It's very possible that with said BIOS, the SNES Classic might just be comparable or equal to the PS Classic in terms of performance there, but I don't know if it can handle DC games like PSC apparently can. It really comes down to which mini console you'd prefer having on your shelf in the end.

So yeah, it's not a bad console, it was just a victim of a very poor line up of games in subpar versions that impacted gameplay for those that enjoyed said games back in the day, and because it was basically a raspberry pi running an emulator that had been on the internet for decades it got a lot of ridicule. You can easily turn it into a powerhouse emulation system and add whatever games you want, but you don't need to invest in a crazy big hard drive unless you plan to play ALL THE GAMES EVER, and even then you can rotate titles out as you have the desire to play them really if you don't have a ton of space. Also look up that PSP BIOS as it may give you a bit of a boost.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been tied up with work & thanks for all the feedback. I'm gonna tinker with my Playstation Classic later on in the week, I bought a 256GB USB drive for all my PS1 games. I can't wait to get it up and running.

I bought one a while back, ended up getting it for free, and I still felt ripped off ;D
I'm sure it's a great machine for modding, but the vanilla experience?? I can see why people were so upset, especially at the original price point of $100.

I haven't really tried modding it yet, I'm more of a CRT kind of guy, and I've got a Wii if I want to emulate stuff on a TV.
I figured at $20, it was worth it just for the USB gamepads (which are not quite as good as Logitech's gamepads...the d-pad has a little trouble with diagonals...maybe the original was like that too?).

As for which emulator perform better, the built in pcsx or the other cores meant for retroarch, there’s really not much difference and some users prefer the built in emu, and there were some games that only work properly with the built in pcsx.

I was put off by all of the ugly graphics issues in the built-in emulator.
