Need Sprite Editing Help
« on: November 24, 2020, 09:49:50 pm »
(I'm new too hacking and stuff so I am not the best at it) Lets say any SNES game with no actual hacking tools made specifically for that game, When you open it in a sprite editor like YYCHR its a piled up mess, Even with the correct color palettes, (made up) For example say a face sprite for one animation, instead of it being together half of the sprite will be in the mess in like a random spot and the other half of the sprite would be in a totally different spot, Is there an easier way to search for whole sprites and edit them?

Depends on if the game actually saved them that way. Even Link to the Past has the sprites stored as mostly a bunch of heads.

Sprites might be stored in a 8x16 pixel arrangement on the NES. Then it helps to view them row-interleaved. Else yes this is how graphics are stored. Similar how you find it on the PPU viewer in your debugger. A lot of games do compress graphics so you can't view them without decompressing or use of a PPU viewer at all. If you look for a way to arrange them you might consider a tile mapping tool. Most game do arrange sprites well so you can arrange them by hand.
