Suggestions for the Cobra Kai NES game
« on: September 11, 2020, 06:50:00 pm »
Just a few minor things I would improve if I could.

1. New Sprites for Miguel and his mom (Pictured below)
2. Change "Fucking Hammer" to "Swinging Shank" and maybe replace the "hammer" with a shank (Also pictured below)
3. Change the "Game Over" text to say, "Dead Meat" and take away the Game Over music
4: Change "Catch the Damn Flies" to "Shit Fly Catch"
5. Change the text that appears before a 2 player match from:
    "One on one
     Game Starts."

     to:

    "Put him in
     a body bag!"

6. There is one spot in the "Miyagi Dojo" Level, after the second "tower" I believe, when you're jumping across the water, where you have to jump on a single block, and then make a very difficult jump, 2 spaces over, to another block, as the wind pushes you back and as enemies and birds and chop sticks are flying at you. That is by far the hardest part of the game. Maybe that could be changed?

7. Also, if possible, it would be great to take away the collisions that happen between characters.

Just some suggestions.

The sprite improvements:

I say this unknowing if you've looked into doing this or not.

Sprite mods shouldn't be too hard with something like TileLayerPro!
The other text mods are also a good entry starting point if you haven't looked through a ROM before. If you need help this is a good place to ask for help. I got tons for nes GOLF and Kickle Cubicle here.

Lol thanks, but I have no idea where to start. I was never good at any of that technical stuff. I'm really just an artist.

To start off, get TileLayerPro.
https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/108/

And some simple tutorials on youtube (linking to John Blue Riggs who got me interested at first!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMACSQjyRDs

these will get you started on modifying the sprites at least. text is a differnt story.

Cheat sheet below on steps. I REALLY advise watching the youtube link.
1) Download TileLayerPro. Icon is a yellow hard hat

2)load your rom into TileLayerPro(the .nes file, if you have a .zip or .7z file you just have to extract it)
 -- you'll see a mess of pictures
-- you should notice familiar images as this is the sprite data
-- remember all images are just stitched together from 8x8 tiles

3) Treat it like paint. primary color is left click, secondary color is right click
-- the colors are weird since this just gives it a default palette
-- you can modify it if you want.

-----
As for text, I'll help ya with that after you modify some graphics as it's FAR easier to do and probably better to see if you like doing this first.

4) Save .nes file when you are happy!
