Chilly in here...

Is there a bugfix list?
Also, I'm curious about the script. Is it more translation or localization or something else?

Chilly in here...

Well, you know what they say, "chili today, hot tamale"... (sorry)

Is there a bugfix list?
Also, I'm curious about the script. Is it more translation or localization or something else?

It's a rewrite. I essentially took a sort of "Nick Meyer Star Trek II" approach. I played through the various other scripts available at the time (FF3 snes, FF6 psx, FF6 Adance, and the RPGOne script), read a bunch of stuff online, and just sort of culled whichever ideas I liked best from all of them. Then, I rewrote essentially the entire story-related dialogue, some NPC dialogue, and the big and small battle captions, in whatever way I thought sounded good. I tried to keep the tone, the feel of FF6 intact, and sort of coat it all with some legitimacy. My opinion was that Woolsey and Slattery's scripts both had problems, and of course the RPGOne translation is now multiple decades old, I believe (or getting there).

There have also been some several enhancements to the gameplay itself. A friend of mine, vivify93, has applied and playtested almost 200 patches from his Project-III Patch (which he doesn't intend to release), which correct bugs/change things in the game. For a full list, click the spoiler below.

Spoiler:
- Applied Blitz Screen (Leet Sketcher). Blitz names display above their button combos in teal on the Blitz Menu.

- Applied Gerad and Sabin (Leet Sketcher). Sabin now reacts to Gerad's final line as Celes pursues him in Nikeah.

- Applied Rewards Display (HatZen08). The reward for a wager at the Dragon's Neck Colosseum will now display

before betting.

- Applied RMOVE to REMOVE (Gi Nattak) [with additional fixing by vivify93]. This changes the Equip Menu option

"RMOVE" to "REMOVE", and "EMPTY" to "NONE".

- Descriptions of every skill viewable from the Main Menu have been cleaned up and clarified.

Gameplay:
- Modified five Esper rewards.

Ramuh teaches Boltra x5 and Poison x2, as opposed to the inverse of the original.
Ifrit teaches Drain x2.
Shiva no longer teaches Cure.
Raiden teaches Meteor x2 (in addition to Quick x1) and gives Speed +2 at level up.
Alexandr gives Vigor +2 at level up.

- Removed elemental bias from Fire, Fira, Firaga vs. Ice, Icera, Icega vs. Bolt, Boltra, Boltga.

For example, Fire had a base power of 21 and an MP cost of 4, whereas Bolt had a base power of 20 but an MP cost

of 6, and Ice had a base power of 22 but an MP cost of 5. Now each spell has the Fire line's MP cost and the

middle ground base power.

- Rather than Safety Bit, the sword Ragnarok can now be rarely stolen from Doom.

- Applied C. V. Reynolds' Bug-fix Compilation. 7 of the 188 patches in the Compilation have been removed for

compatibility purposes.

=====---------_----------======

- Applied Alphabetical Rage (Assassin). Enemy names in the Rage Menu will now helpfully be displayed A-Z.

- Applied Aquatic Caves (PowerPanda). This allows Mog to learn Water Rondo in Ebot's Rock and the Ancient Castle

Tunnels.

- Applied B Button Dash [Dash B ver.] (Master ZED) [with additional fixing by SilentEnigma]. Hold down the B

Button to sprint. Stacks with Sprint Shoes.

- Applied Button Settings Menu Restoration (Novalia Spirit). This restores the Config Menu option to reassign

button bindings. No matter what the B Button is assigned to, you will always sprint by holding it.

- Applied More Frequent Desperation Attacks (DrakeyC) [with additional tweaking by vivify93]. This increases the

occurrance chance of a Desperation Attack to 1/8, allows them to be used during the first 25 seconds of a battle,

and allows them to be used more than once per battle.

- Applied The Sketching Mime (vivify93) [with additional tweaking by vivify93], which allows Gogo to equip all

Brushes, the Beret, and the Coronet.

- Applied Summon This! (Lenophis, Terii Senshi) to fix the dummied Summon command.

- Applied SwdTech Ready Stance [Version B] (HatZen08), which changes SwdTech to behave more like it does in the

Smart Device and PC version. Now the player chooses a SwdTech for Cyan, then can command other teammates as the

skill charges.

- Applied True Duel (HatZen08), permitting all characters other than Umaro to be controlled in the Colosseum as if

it were a normal fight.

- Applied Y Equip Relics (Leet Sketcher) [with additional fixing by Subtraction], which lets players switch

between the Equip and Relic Menus with the Y Button. Unlike B Button Dash, this will respect button rebinding.

Graphics:
- Slightly cleaned up 12x12 (dialogue) font. Majorly cleaned up 8x8 (menu) font; now both fonts' shadows match!

[Editor's Note: The menu font is a variant of the PSX FF6 font (just about the only nice thing about that version,

IMHO - Spooniest)]

- Swapped tilde ~ and forward slash / in 12x12 and 8x8 fonts. Done to fix issue where a tilde was shown between HP

numbers when ATB gauge is set to "Off" in Config Menu.

- Applied Color Wheel (Leet Sketcher). This allows the barrier outlines for buffs/debuffs to cycle rather than one

taking precedence.

- Applied King's Robes (Leet Sketcher). This fixes a narrative inconsistency where Edgar would shed his disguise

and then put it back between scenes.

- Applied Total Graphics Uncensorship (vivify93), which reverts every last graphics change made to FFIII US.

For those who are intent on knowing, I did include a couple of referential bits of silly humor, but I kept them out of the main dialogue, and almost all of them are Final Fantasy related. The jailer in Figaro Castle refers to the prisoners as "tortured thieves," Lola sends a letter asking for the "Johnny C. Bad" record by name (this is the title of the Albrook Bar/Coliseum Music). Little things like that, off the beaten path. I tried to keep it tasteful.

Originally (back in 2011-12) I had written a bit racier of a script, and changed an item (Sprint Shoes) into something that would basically just make a character invincible (Wingboots), then upped its price to the maximum. Those changes were reverted in about 2014, as it seemed a bit of a bridge too far to have people swearing all over the place, and to upset the apple cart in terms of gameplay so much.

Still, there are a couple of nasty little surprises, for those who play all the way to the end...but I won't speak further (they do not alter the story, I'll say that).

That should about cover it. Right now I'm at Kohlingen, on my current run-through, and I think everything's just about done here, but I wanted to solicit some outside opinions.

I find that doing things solely because you want to do them is the best policy, expect for the part where it attracts people who want to do horrible things like give feedback, request advice, and ask for more features.

Keep doing what you want to do and the userbase will take care of itself.

Nobody responded after one day?! Abort mission! I've said it before and I'll say it again, nobody is going to jump out of their seats with excitement especially these days over a script change, it'll take a lot more than just that to cause some hype or interest. It's just the way it is. There are like 2-3 extensive dialog rewrites/translations for FF6 out there that I will say without playing this one yet are much more in-depth, not to say your's isn't good, but it's not as popular at all and thus won't bring in the attention you seek. Keep your head up man, enjoy your own hack if nothing else, that's why you made it after all right?

I'm well aware, and was, back in 2011, when I began the project (there were 2-3 rewrites available then... There's more now).

This was why mine is intended to be extremely daringly different. I don't know if I've ever made it clear, but I purposely decided against trying to be accurate to the Japanese script, on principal.

I was, after all, not contracted to work on it, any more than anyone here is contracted by the original creators of these games to edit their stuff.

And yeah, the end result was, I can't please everyone so I might as well please myself.

Honestly I'm bored. Some doofer smashed the rear end of my car 3 weeks ago and I'm sitting around waiting on it to get sorted out.

Edit: Not to say I'm not seriously working on a new version. I am. I'm playtesting right now in fact.

Well I do hope people play it, I respect what you've done an all regardless. Maybe all you wanted to do was edit the script, and that's totally fine. I wish people would show Stand Guard more attention, I'm a fan of any project that took care and time. It's just a bit hard to see how fast you are to say nobody likes it, when in fact it's more a matter of not many people actually playing it. Kinda the same thing, but different. Anyways I mean no harm or foul, I respect the work you've done with this hack and I was actually watching you play it the other day on Twitch  ;D

I feel like my initial kneejerk edit may have had a bit more of a Rodney Dangerfield accent than came thru

It occurs to me, though, that I should really post more images. A picture is worth a thousand words, they say.

Sonofa---

Fixed.

Also, I'm about to submit version 1.00 of a new version of this. I am not going to call it the same thing as before, since it has been several years since the last version of Stand Guard and there were... complications that made this basically a different project.

It's now called Final Fantasy VI: SG-III.

Eh...I'm kinda hearing more of a Bobcat Goldthwait from you.

Hey. I couldn't downloaded SG-III from RHDN hack page successfully (unlike your link here). The download size is unknown, and the resulting file sizes are different each time. The zip file is not even zip, but some kind of html. You seem to use a link to some external site and the downloaded file is actually the redirect page or something of that site, I'm not sure.

BTW, vivify93's Total Graphics Uncensorship v2.00 is also up on RHDN hack page, with new changes. Were those changes already incorporated in SG-III v1.00?

Anyway, congrats for your new Stand Guard!

Hey. I couldn't downloaded SG-III from RHDN hack page successfully (unlike your link here).

Was able to replicate problem on my end, in a way. The download produced an error message from 7-zip that asked me to open the last part of a multi-part archive, which I have no idea why such a thing would happen.

I have re-upped it. Sorry about that... dunno what the weirdness was there.

Edit: Should be live now.

BTW, vivify93's Total Graphics Uncensorship v2.00 is also up on RHDN hack page, with new changes. Were those changes already incorporated in SG-III v1.00?

With the exception of a couple of missing pixels and some different gradienting on the sprite for the "MUTE" spell, yes. That was the update vivify93 made recently.

I hope you enjoy!

And congrats on SG-III, this is now (probably), my definitive way of playing the game.

High praise. Thank you!
