ROM Hacks: Kirby's Dream Land, in Color!
« on: July 07, 2020, 04:06:37 pm »

Update By: Greenandacat

Kirby's Dream Land for the Original Gameboy has been updated to support color! Play the 28-year-old classic in a whole new light on your Gameboy Color. In addition, areas with lots of enemies that would previously lag the game have been fixed to run at full speed. No other changes have been made, so you can play the original the exact way you remember it.

OMG this looks great.'  I can't wait for a Kirby's 2 color.

Am going to try this one out.'

I'm also a bit surprised nobody has colored in Super mario land 3 - wario land.
I really am waiting for that also.

I made a small update to the colourization hack of my own.
Here's what my hack of Kirby Dream Land DX does:
  • Restores the official copyright text in the title screen
  • Modifies the floating Kirby sprite at the Title screen to not look as derpy. I added a bit of shading to the sprite, and I also modified the default pink colour used for the title screen to match the pink used in-game
  • Modified the HUD graphics so the small Kirby icon now shares the colours of Kirby in-game

If anyone wants to try it out, here's the link for it:

I love the work you did to the color hack. It improves the hack a lot. I would suggest though moving the ips from bwass.org to somewhere else. Malwarebytes doesn't seem to like the site and flags it as having a trojan.

What file hosting website do you suggest that keeps the link up permanently and doesn't require to be registered?

Perhaps submit it as an addendum patch here? :)

I could do that, yeah.
Or maybe as a side hack for it.
Although I'm not sure if the original dev of the DX version would be okay with me doing that or not.
I really don't want to submit the hack, have its page ready and all, only for the dev to strike it with a non-compliant request, even if I credit the original creator properly (since a lot of hackers seem to do that even when credited properly).

archive.org deleted it. So I hosted your patch here

I wonder how many other (unknown) hacks are not hosted here because of that problem. :(

Thanks for the addendum patch, ShadowOne333. Should this be stacked over the original patch? I'll probably test it in some hours.

ShadowOne333 addendum is an all-in-one patch; just apply on vanilla and play!

@knderia saved your bwass link:
https://web.archive.org/save/

Which is still alive!

And the permalink is

@ShadowOne333
So if you have some previous stuff that can't be hosted on rhdn anymore, do it that way! Mind sharing any deleted work (in another thread)??

Amazing to play this oldie in living color! Fantastic job! Hope you find a way to deal with some of the "omitted" stuff mentioned in the reviews.

Oh I see.
Although, I still don't understand why that user says that Archive.org deleted it.
I can still download it from the original Bwass link, and the Archive.org link you posted I can access as well.

As for other patches not available mmmmm...
I can think of a handful, but mostly because of dubious reasons.

Anyway, it's good to know there's that way of handling unhosted previous patches. :)

Hi, I know I'm not the first, but I couldn't help but ask, is there a tutorial to learn how to color gameboy games? I am really interested in learning, I know it is not as simple as it sounds, and I have basic notions of how it works but I am not really oriented. if anyone could help me. I could start by coloring the first Wario land and then Megaman V. Greetings to all.

I would second this tutorial, I would also love to colorize Mega Man V, and other games like Kirbys Dreamland 2, Donkey Kong 94, Super Mario Land 3: Warioland, etc.
