Super Mario Travellers - My biggest SMW Hack by far
« on: May 22, 2020, 08:56:58 am »

Hi there! Welcome to my newest project.
You may have played my previous hacks like Superstar Mario World or Another Mario World 2: Luigi's Mission

In this hack, you have a companion called Glubita. She's an alien from a planet called Heiwatia.
Heiwatia is in danger. The planet, and Glubita's family need your help!
the plot is not final and may change a bit in the future.
For now, Glubita only follows you on your journey. She will get a bigger role later in the game.

My goal is to make this my biggest and my best SMW hack by far.
With lots of variety in levels, lots of custom ASM, and at least 100 exits.
My friend RussianMan will be helping me with ASM and other stuff.

I've been working on this hack for two years now and released three demos.
Download the final demo here!
this demo is from January 2020 and is already a bit outdated, since a lot has changed since then.
You can play world 1 and 2 in this demo.

Here's some screenshots and gifs:

Wow. That's pretty damn nice!
The graphics are very consistent in style which is something of a pet peeve of mine.
Any new power-ups?

It looks fantastic, but I hope I won't sound rude by posting a few touch-ups and suggestions:

For the title, I went in and redrew it a bit and touched up the palette to look a bit more on-model and to be a bit smoother:

This one mostly uses the prior palette, but with a more natural skin tone and slightly different overalls (I know the sprite has the more indigo ones, so you can ignore that if you wish to use this in the first place).

I also made a slightly different version with fewer unique colors, but the goal of this one was to smooth the image further with more "in-between" shades to simulate anti-aliasing:

This version also has a little bit of extra shading for more depth. The gloves use the skin tone for shading here, and the boots and buttons use skin-ton colors to save on colors used.

Here are the images themselves:

The other thing is that for the sunset beach, I feel the ground shading should be reversed, like this:

This was quick and dirty, but I think that having a more saturated, red-hued palette like this with higher contrast and shading towards the top would accentuate the sunset because as it is it looks like the ground is being lit from below. I understand the sun is very low, but as-is, the ground looks weird with the sprites. That is just how I feel about it, though.

The hack in general looks incredible, and I can't wait to try it out!

[EDIT - A few more touch-ups]

Nope. But there are some levels where you can play as an enemy.
A Buzzy Beetle for example

This level is playable in the demo.

Oh! i like that a lot actually. I'll definitely use it and give you credit. I'll change up the sunset beach palette aswell.

Looks amazing! Really like that aqueduct (?) level in the last preview of the main post; looks really awesome!

Also the idea of playing as an enemy sounds interesting! I wonder as which critters one will be able to play 👀

@Stivi
I am impressed by your expansive imagination and creativity! Your co-partner also knows how to wield his blade of magical asm knowledge. :)

Most importantly to me, it's a strong teaser for lots of tasty, future fun!

((I need to stop doing hacking as a hobby and instead start finding/playing non-commerical creations like these~!))

Thanks for all the feedback!

Here's the first level of world 4. It was supposed to be the second level, but it's easier than the other level.
It's a silhouette level!

The bouncing shy guys have a weird death frame, not sure how to fix that.

It's probably an error in the sprite's tilemap when Y-flipped/mirrored.
