question - what is VWF?
« on: May 04, 2020, 07:00:06 pm »
i'm looking through romhacks of Mega Man Xtreme 2 and came across a romhack titled Mega Man Xtreme VWF edition.

judging from the screenshots, i'm guessing it changes the font of the text during cutscenes.

but what does the acronym VWF in the title refer to?

Variable-Width Font

It allows you to fit more characters in a given space. It is a necessary hack for many fan-translations because Japanese games often use a monospaced font, AKA Fixed-Width Font, due to the shape of Chinese and Japanese characters.

To give a different description of a variable-width font, it means that "i" doesn't take up the same amount of space as "w". The character width varies by complexity. "i" might be 3 pixels wide, while "w" would be 7 pixels.
