My apologies in advance if this kind of question isn't allowed (I've checked the rules again and it doesn't seem I'm breaking any rule as I'm not asking about a translation progress to a specific person).

I was wondering if any of the remaining Tengai Makyou rpgs that are still untranslated, are being actively worked on. I know Tom was determined to work in some of them, but we all know what happened so that option is completely and definitely ruled out.

I've been thinking for some time in starting to play rpgs in Japanese with the aid of online translation services such as DeepL, etc (mainly rpgs that look like aren't receiving a translation in a short-medium term, if ever) and the Tengai Makyou saga came to mind. But I'd like to ask first if there's any group or individual working on them (I've made my research beforehand but I've only found outdated and dead threads here and there, several of them made by people who are no longer part of the scene or are focused in other romhacking endeavors).

I appreciate any info anyone could give me about this. I'd like to play the TM saga in its original language only if there isn't any other possible option as it's a saga I've been dying to play for so long (I feel really fortunate for at least Zero and Oriental Blue being translated, particularly the former).

The new versions of Retroarch have completely-integrated atuo-translation.  I've been meaning to check it out for a while.

Yes, in fact I'll rely on that as well. I've read some time ago that DeepL translations are a little more accurate than the online services that Retroarch uses, so I think I'll combine both tools to obtain the best possible results. And if in the end I have to resort to writing the texts manually and keep pasting them in the DeepL text window I'm willing to do it, as it'll help me gain at least reading and writing fluency in Japanese as it helped me obtain the same in English back when I started playing rpgs in my early teens.

i've yet to see a coherent autotranslation to/from Japanese. you'll see a lot of garbled, useless nonsense, even with some very basic sentences.

Yeah, I'm fearing that will be the case. But given the current circumstances, I'm willing to put up with that. If a so-so translation helps me understand more or less the general meaning of most sentences, I'll try to "auto-complete" with the limited Japanese knowledge I've been able to muster these recent years. It will probably help me a lot to improve on it.

The alternative is waiting for someone to take up exactly the games you want to play and wait for a few years for him/her to complete it, praying for nothing to happen in the meantime that prevents the project from finishing.

sure, it's better than nothing. but there's going to be a lot of guesswork involved. it won't be easy to achieve writing fluency this way.
it might be easier to start with, or at least supplement your method with some gamified language learning courses, like duolingo.

Gonna have to shoot down that using Retroarch autotranslation. The Tengai Makyou games (or at least from 2 on-wards) have fully voiced cutscenes with no subtitles. Since it's likely the auto translation only looks for text, it won't help there.

Yes, I know, there are some compromises that will have to be made. But even so, it's worth than nothing
