Not sure how to edit a GBA rom
« on: April 01, 2020, 01:03:30 am »
Hey, guys. Can someone tell me (preferably) or direct me to some sources, in which I can learn how to change a game's text (Summon Night for the GBA). I'm willing to go through a lot.

Also if you can tell me how to edit the games tiles and/or mapping, that would be a bonus.

I kept searching, but many have been mostly for pokemon and most other popular games.  :banghead:In other words using tools made specifically for those popular games. Any help would be appreciated. :)

Hi Lonely_Dunsparce,

i recommend taking a look at this neat starter guide:

http://www.romhacking.net/start/

For people unfamiliar with Romhacking these things will take some time to learn and understand, so beware and take your time with all the new information.

I never translated a GBA Rom before, but maybe these tools below can help you.
Please understand that these tools need to be told what exacly to do in order to work properly.
They are not specialized tools for certain games, but rather can be programmed/scripted in a way to work for your game.

A good HEX Editor that can display a lot of different encodings:

https://wxmedit.github.io/

A really cool and powerful Tile Editor:

https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/991/

A tool that is able to dump text pointers + associated text:

https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/647/

A tool in which you can re-insert the dumped text pointers and the text you wrote:

https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/224/

If your game uses SHIFT-JIS, a great SHIFT-JIS Table file that can be used by both Atlas and Cartographer:

It is much the same on any system. Looks like you already have some nice links

I have a guide to GBA and DS stuff http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=14708 if you want more specifics.

If you more just want hardware documentation so you can adapt the stuff above then

More for programming but have it anyway
