Then I noticed I already had this sitting in my Hacks folder, marked as v1.0 dating back to 2019-06-26 (when I patched the thing), I looked at the changelog from mine and what in this "new" one and they look identical? Am I missing something here... What are the differences? Are they the same?

Is that like from June or something, right?
If so, a lot happened after May. I suggest you do go ahead and update if you haven't.
Right from the get go, I recall there were a whole lot of graphical changes around that time, also a bunch of bugfixes, and most importantly the full Mother 2 Title screen implemented into EarthBound's, which so far this has been the only hack of EB to do so

So please, update if you haven't!

I forgot to unzip the file initially, but even when I did try to patch an unzipped file, the game doesn't work. All I get is a gray screen.
