Sonic SpinballRomHack
« on: February 07, 2020, 01:09:43 pm »
Hi! im new to this community and i was enjoying some roms'n stuff, but i asked myself the next thing. ┬┐IS IT possible to romhack sonic spinball? i was trying to do some hex editing with it and nothing came up yet. So i was curious if there was some mega drive rom hack program or a hacking program that supports any mega drive rom.

Pretty much anything is possible if you're willing to put the work in.  But if you can't find any existing romhacks, then that means no one has really tried before, which means there's that much more work to do.

There is an awful lot of enthusiasm for hacking Sonic games in general, but I don't think Sonic Spinball has ever been particularly popular, so it would not be surprising if it has gone largely untouched.

Also, there is no such thing as "a hacking program that supports any mega drive rom".  Some ROMs might have common features, but usually particular details like level structure have to be worked out from scratch for every game.
This signature is an illusion and is a trap devised by Satan. Go ahead dauntlessly! Make rapid progres!

well the good news is you picked a sega gensis game. they tend to be easier to hack in general (no bank swapping, cart enhancement chips weird music/GFX compression) BUT when it comes to sonic spinball you may have a hard time starting out.

the only advice i can offer is look into game genie codes and keep notes on what values they change.

Let's see. Searching for "Sonic Spinball" on the site proper:

https://www.romhacking.net/documents/731/

Searching online for "Sonic Spinball Editor":

You may want to ask around Sonic Retro, though they require a well worded and thoughtful forum acceptance request. If you don't want to or can't register, search for their Sonic-related utilities:

What exactly where you thinking of hacking?  I've done a lot of work on Sonic Spinball making Game Genie codes.  Most of the codes deal with gravity, "steering" Sonic, how fast Sonic moves, invincibility to certain hazards, modifying access to the Multi-ball bonus levels, etc.  If that's the type of thing you are interested in hacking, then here is a link to all of the Game Genie codes (which can be unencrypted to show the ROM address)...

I can provide assembly trace logs for any of that stuff if needed, which would help for more detailed hacking.

well im planning on doing some hard work i know it will be hard tho. but im planning on a Sonic Spinball romhack where there is another levels and we play as tails(tho the tails idea is in doubt) and maybe fix the music if so. but i dont see so bad the music. even so if i can't make a sonic spinball romhack maybe in the future and i will go with my second idea a Sonic Spinball 2 using sonic 2 or 3 as base.
