The one that comes to mind is the animation slowdown removal fix for Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. It made the PSP version playable.

Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets is probably worthy of a whole series. The team took an incomplete rom dump and a VHS tape and reconstructed the entire game.

Neither of these were bad games to begin with though.

I feel like there are some possibilities if you look back to old school grind heavy RPGs that people removed the grind from.

The hilarious footnote to this is what Square-Enix would do to mobile ports of the PSP version later, where they would "fast forward" the game during slowdowns only instead of remove the slowdown.  This results in sounds kinda like if a chipmunk made them.  Still not a bad game, but most likely the worst version of it.

I'm thinking of creating a series of videos on my YouTube Channel about the worst NES/SNES/SEGA games (or games from that era) that hackers MANAGED TO FIX.

Like the game has to be very broken or unplayable or just very unenjoyable. And the rom hack manages to fix it.
I hate to self-advertise, but I made a proof of concept of re-introducing SNES-quality music in quite a few GBA port of SNES games, whose GBA port originaly had horribly downgraded music quality.

Sure none of the GBA games were "broken, unplayable or very unenjoyable". But I think I fixed something and made a point about the incompetence of people responsible of porting the games to the GBA.

^^ You shouldn't hate to self-advertise your improvements hacks because those hacks are some of the best out there and fix those games which might not be "broken" technically, but are unenjoyable for sure to anyone who's played both versions or has ears.

I always wanted to go back and fix bad games of the 16 bit era. Somehow, I kept ending up with em as a kid.

The person/team that translated correctly Castlevania: Simon's Quest from the famicom script and also giving a map and save slots, I never thought that was quite possible, amazing!

Thanks to the person who mentioned my Phantasy Star II hack.

I've done cleanup/quality-of-life hacks for a few games that haven't aged well. However, I wouldn't describe any of these as bad or broken games. (Your mileage may vary.) They definitely would NOT have been considered bad or broken at the time they were released, so I'm not sure if they're quite what you're looking for.
