A simple hack
« on: December 03, 2019, 10:52:40 pm »
Hello everyone, I have an idea on a simple hack for return of Double Dragon. I what to change a single sprite in the game because I feel its out of place in the game. I have said sprite in png format, but I do not know how you convert it into the format for snes. Is there a program that can do that? If so is it a hard one to understand?

Thank You for taking the time to read my post. I hope everyone has a great week.  :)

Try yy-chr program http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/958/

Image should be in bmp format and 128x128 size.

I've never done it for snes, so I could be wrong.

Thank you very much Cyneprepou4uk, I gave the program a try, but I could not quite get the hang of it. Its kinda tricky. Is that normal for yy-chr?

I am very new to this, so any information is very helpful. :-D

I don't know, let's hear what you have tried exactly.

Ok, I open the program and then click on the rom. It then shows me a bunch colorful squres and when I zoom in on them I can see the sprites, but there are all mixed together and I cannot find the main one that you play as in the game. That is the sprite I want to change. I am able to import the png into yy-chr, but I cannot get the sprite into the game. I do not know what I am doing wrong?

Sounds correct. But just in case I want to see a screenshot of the program after you open a rom.

Yep, tiles usually look that way. Small squares lying here and there, that game puts together to create a sprite.

In order to find tiles of the sprite that you need to change, you can erase or corrupt one or several pages at a time, then save, open this rom in emulator and see if your character has changed or vanished. If not, try another page. And so you can locate those tiles.

Don't forget to make a backup file beforehand.

Ok, How does one do that. I never used this program before. Does it matter what one I delete?

Doesn't matter where you start. Keep deleting until you find it.

OK, I will do that, I know I might sound like a broken record, but how do I know I find it? Will thing look like the sprite I am using as a replacement? And will it make the rom unplayable if I delete willy nilly?

If you delete tiles of the sprite, then guess what happens - this sprite will become invisible in the game. That's how you know you've found it.

If you are talking about replacing tiles using your picture, then not exactly. I'm pretty sure colors would be messed up. You'll need to reassign colors to tiles first using a 5th right button at the top. Without setting an approximately proper palette in the program this can take a while.

It's very unlikely you will break something if you delete tiles only.

Ok, I will give it a shot and I will let you know what happens. :-)
