Originally part of the early wave of NES graphical ROM hacks in 1997, Super Mario Bros. DX is still getting updates after 25 years. Early versions were spread via IRC and Internet message boards. These initial versions changed only the CHR table. After the author was encouraged to incorporate palette changes as well, a v1.0 update was published to Zophar's Domain in 1999, to acclaim from the site's staff. To celebrate 25 years of the 1997 versions, the project has received an update to version v4.0. A collection of extras is planned starting in 2023 until the 25th anniversary of the 1.0 release.

This patch changes only the graphics of the original Super Mario Bros. for NES, but the changes are extensive. It can also be combined with various level hacks and minor gameplay hacks.

This was one of the first SMB hacks I played when I discovered ROM hacking in 2003, glad I got to see it evolve, I'm playing through the newest version tonight for sure.  ;)

A YouTuber uncovered a really stupid bug in 4.0. But fret not! There's a fix in the submission queue RIGHT NOW, and it includes the first batch of anniversary goodies!
Watch for version 4.2!

I'm really happy to hear that! Your work always reminds me of the fun I had way back when I was more active in the scene. :)
