Translate Yu Yu Hakusho Final (SNES)
« on: June 21, 2019, 05:38:13 pm »
Good evening everyone!

I would like to try to modify and translate from Japanese to English the words of the game Yu Yu Hakusho Final for Super Nintendo.

I've already taken a look at some tutorials but I can not find the words that are in Japanese in any hex editor, etc.

Could you help me with some tips, which programs to use?

Thank you very much.

Not sure where the normal crew is, but I'll give my regular spiel. I made a short series of videos about how I go about dumping scripts. It's not as effective as it might be if you learn more about the game hardware, but it works for a lot of stuff. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkybU1NLulWjcsr1mN6rKcVJBnMsF2Efs You might want to check my other video about working with City Hunter for some additional context around a game like this. https://youtu.be/MPKfhdwWupM

I took a quick look and dug up part of the text encoding. It's double-byte encoding and this is the first character of the hiragana script. 0101=あ You might have to insert some values by hand, or programmatically like I did in the City Hunter video, in order to figure out the full encoding. It also looks like there's some graphical text, and I think the graphics are stored 2BPP and will show up in YY-CHR using the "2BPP GB" setting, but NOT the font used by the text routine. That's compressed or in some other format I can't find (hence why I said you may need to insert/edit some values).

That's all I've got.

EDIT: Also the "getting started" section is useful for what is says. http://www.romhacking.net/start/
