Games that use font Chicago?
« on: June 15, 2019, 12:50:07 am »
Weird question, but I was thinking the other day on the prevalence of games (Namely RPGs) that used a variation of the font Chicago back in the 1990's. So I was trying to compile a list of games that used a bitmap font version of Chicago.

Here's what I have so far.

Official:
- Chrono Trigger (SNES, PS1)
- Dragon View (SNES)
- Final Fantasy V (PS1)
- Final Fantasy VI (SNES, PS1)
- Secret of Evermore (SNES)

Fan Translation:
- Bahamut Lagoon (DeJap, Neil Corlett, Tomato) (SNES)
- Dragon Ball Z: Super Gokūden - Totsugeki-Hen (Kakkoii) (SNES)
- Final Fantasy V (RPGe) (SNES)
- Magic Knight Rayearth (mziab) (SNES)
- Might and Magic: Book Two (MrRichard999) (SNES)
- Parasite Eve (GreenGoblin) (PS1)
- Sailor Moon: Another Story (Bishoujo Senshi Translations; mziab, vivify93, Bishoujo Senshi Translations) (SNES)
- Sailor Moon R (FuSoYa, Masamune) (SNES)
- Star Ocean (DeJap) (SNES)
- Tales of Phantasia (DeJap) (SNES)
- Tales of Phantasia (Phantasian Productions) (PS1)
- Wizardry Gaiden IV: Taima no Kodou (MrRichard999) (SNES)
- Wonder Project J: Kikai no Shonen Pino (WakdHacks) (SNES)

Mod:
- Parasite Eve (Font Hack - Green Goblin) (SNES)
- Secret of Mana (VWF Edition - FuSoYa; Relocalized - Timbo) (SNES)

You could at least link an example of it
https://fontlibrary.org/en/font/chicagoflf

At this point I don't really have any examples, however that is more because unless a font is bad I tend not to notice it.

Well! Since I can't tinker into those files to check the font's name, I'll play it by the looks of it, don't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong ^^:

Chaos Seed (Dynamic-Designs)

Feda The Emblem of Justice (Dynamic-Designs)

Lennus II (Dynamic-Designs)

Record of Lodoss War (Dynamic-Designs)

Shin Seikoku: La Wares (Dynamic-Designs)

Hmm! I see a pattern here…

Shin Megami Tensei II (Aeon Genesis): the dialogues at least, Thanks for the clarification Gideon Zhi.

Treasure Hunter G: not sure about this one. The intro looks like the Chicago font but in-game it is somewhat different.

Mahou Kishi Rayearth (LNF Translations, RPGe): it seems close enough,

Now that I think of it, the Chicago font is a beautiful thing. Thank you for making me realize that. ^^

I seem to remember that almost all Square rpg's used that font. FF's especially come to mind.

SMT2 does not use Chicago.

Of the games I've done, I can recall the following using Chicago:
G Gundam, Madou Monogatari, Cross Dimension 0079.

The official PS1 translation of Chicago (for the dialogue font) but they didn't make it VWF so it looks awful.
(though they used the typical early '90s Square 8x8 font. The one used in FF4, FFMQ and Chrono Trigger)

Did Madou Monogatari use that? Maybe I'm confusing it with the Phantasy Star IV font Nightcrawler really liked. :D
Taking a look at your page, I don't think that's Chicago, Gid. At least not how I remember it.

Are you sure? As far as I know (I've played all of them), none of the titles you mentioned use Chicago, especially not the Dynamic-Designs translations, which use some thin font for the most part.

Yeah, I'm positive that Madou Monogatari and Phantasy Star IV use the same font, which in turn seems pretty close to an old font named Terminus Bold. Definitely not Chicago.

I wish the new official Seiken Densetsu 3/Trials of Mana translation used this font lol, then it would feel like it belongs.

I feel the same about the FF GBA ports.  The font's okay, but it just feels like the real one's missing.  I guess in both cases it's too thick or doesn't look right when smaller?

Absolutely not, mziab! If your hunch is right, that my previous post was wrong on all accounts, then:

My previous comment wasn't my brightest post on these boards. :P Apology everyone.

On this subject I'd actually love to know the name of the font used by Dynamic-Designs translations, because I like it too.

Super Drakken / Dragon View on SNES (official localization) uses it too.

I think one of the non-english fan translations of Parasite Eve uses it?

I actually stuck Chicago into Solid Runner, and it looks remarkably good.

Strangely, I only came up with 4 official games.

I actually stuck Chicago into Solid Runner, and it looks remarkably good.

I was actually thinking of that the other day, which prompted me to make this topic. I remember someone went, "Are you really sure you want to stick with Chicago?" Another person replied, "What's wrong with Chicago?" To which the first person said, "Well, it's just that it's overused..."

I can add it to the list assuming you chose to stick with it. I like it a lot!
