Mobile RPGs involving food?
« on: May 15, 2019, 03:45:20 pm »
Does anyone know of any mobile anime RPGs, besides Food Fantasy, The World Ends with You, and Adventure Bar Story, where you can obtain different kinds of food to feed your characters? (Preferably any that did not undergo any kind of censorship for localization like the first of those?)

Are foods typically censored in localisation? Does Japan have a thing for penis pasta that I am not aware of?

I assume you mean does not change foodstuffs into those more recognisable to a western audience. Censorship has subtly different meanings to different people but not that, though it is an interesting facet of the liberal-literal-pizza cats translation debate. That is also before the historical foods discussion.

You said "obtain". Normally I would be thinking some kind of crafting system here but if you want "functionally just another potion/healing item" then I can try that. I tend not to notice such things though if it is not a notable mechanic within a game, even less so if readily available potions and such things do better than food.

Also what are we calling mobile here? Some people purposely exclude the handhelds from the likes of Sony and Nintendo, others don't. Given you can reasonably emulate many of those on a mobile phone or table these days I will go with included here, if for no other reason than I don't know much about andrios games these days. Will skip the Switch if that is the only option though.
If we do include the DS then I would probably point at Contact https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ds/930222-contact/faqs/45723

https://suikoden.fandom.com/wiki/Food
https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Cooking
https://dragons-crown.fandom.com/wiki/Camp (though a lot of Vanillaware's stuff will have food in it).
Harvest Moon and Rune Factory do much here.

I meant about characters who originally bore flesh here or there having their outfits modified internationally to cover said parts up.  Trivial as it may be, I do find it insulting that Elex would try to hide parts that people even in real life display all the time, as if there'd be any backlash against such a game that isn't even aimed to young children anyway.

Okay, maybe I should've been more specific about that: I am looking for the kind of game that keeps having levels added to, and specifically for Android.

I guess you must have missed any of the last ~20 last posts of McKnight... All of those posts talk about how Food Fantasy got "censored" and he even offered money a few times to get it "uncensored"...
There has to be a better life.

Tales of Phantasia comes to mind. You can forget to feed your character as long as you want and they won't starve, however they'll be weaker in battle.

I can't think of many RPGs like that at all.  Continual expansion is not generally associated with RPGs.

Anyone who's familiar with such other games as Cutie Riot: Anime Girls Clash, Girls X Battle, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica Gaiden: Magia Record, would know what subgenre I'm referring to.

With regards to always having levels added to are there no roguelikes these days? Most of those have a food system as well, though usually just food or food for whatever transform you are at that point.

Gumballs and Dungeons did it for leveling up your gumballs or something. Had to make some kind of food, I barely even remember.  As far as censoring, honestly they have that sort of translation with engrish (but believe it or not, it's in a way that adds to the charm instead of being incomprehensible... in fact the jokes are all written pretty well) so it'd be really weird if anything was.

All the Square-Enix ports have alcohol uncensored, if that helps any.

Can't think of much else.  Dungeons of Dredmor I think got an iOS port (probably as RIP as Gaslamp Games is by now), and I believe that's 100% straight.  It's full of different kinds of cheese, alcohol, and meats/innards.  Then again that's also all in english.

Recently Kemco has released some RPGs with cooking/crafting mechanics. I think one was called Marenian Tavern Story. Kemco makes good RPGs but they make so many  it kind of gets cookie cutter like. I haven't tried this particular RPG, but check it out maybe you'll like it. If not there's always pay2win Cooking Mama mobile.  ;)

Will be sure to play MTS at some point, but in the meantime, are any of the others the kind that keeps getting levels added to?  I'm looking for something to play for just a few days at a time, whenever I run out of steam while writing a fanfic, something with no definitive end to get hyped about getting closer and closer to that would keep me distracted for longer than I'd want.

Well if you're waiting for magia record, the English release was announced for some time in May 2019. Though I'm a little confused by "games that keep getting levels added to". From the games you referenced it seems you are looking for a waifu gatcha type of game, if that's the case they are all over the Google play store. I also see a lot of downloadable APKs on the net.

I was actually considering Magia Record for in case nothing comes my way that would interest me.  Though, I thought it was announced for some unspecified date this summer.

Gatcha games are a type of game I'm looking for, but not the only type.  If your team is generally fixed, that's fine with me too.

I probably should have specified this back in my opening post, but I was focused on getting my point across and didn't want to shoot suggestions down from there (plus I got a nice few new entries for TV Tropes: Game Gourmet).  But, here is exactly what I'm looking for, as I figured out for another forum as we went along:

-for Android
-anime-style
-no definitive end
-involving a variety of food to feed your characters (This is the one Magia Record falls short of.)
-not modified in any way besides translation for international release
-multiple characters at your command

The above criteria are exactly what Food Fantasy was, but after what I assumed would be a simple matter of transplanting images between versions turned out to be much more convoluted and beyond my hiring budget, I am just too pissed off to want anything more to do with that game.  (And I never even fed anything to anyone when I was actually playing it several months ago.)

(In case anyone's wondering, food is basically a reminder of the Earthbound trilogy (an exception to the anime-style rule), which in turn was the inspiration for that fanfic I mentioned in an earlier post, which I am eventually hoping to commission to have turned into a game.  I primarily want games that will inspire me to continue writing that each time I take some time to recharge.)
