Hiya!

I've some diving into Castlevania II asm to make some edits to the terrain. I've already accomplished what I've set out to do, but I have learned how the map data is stored. Would there be any interest in a level editor? I wasn't able to find any functional editors online anywhere. I feel like this game has some hack potential.

If you can make a CV2 editor, I'd say go for it!

I do happen to have a Castlevania 2 editor on me, I uploaded it here, so you can take a look at it. I added the OCX file already, I hadda the the editor as Administrator in Windows 10. So if you can make a better CV2 editor better than this one, I'd be happy to try it out. 8)

I love playing with level editors. :D

If anyone else reads this, feel free to upload this editor to the site. I'd do it but I've been busy looking for housing all day today and tomorrow.

Always interested in new tools for Castlevania games.
The series is kinda sorely lacking in editors that do anything truly interesting in regards to extensive level layout editing.
This causes most hacks to basically just be tile map and graphics edits but with the overall path unchanged.

Time that could be spent on SotN in my blunt opinion.

That's awesome! However, I couldn't get it to run. On windows 7 and also on wine, I got the error "component mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly registered." Looking it up, I found the file online, but its SHA1 seemed to be wrong, so I opted not to install it. I imagine this has something to do with Visual Basic, but I am not sure it is even possible to attain Visual Basic or its dependencies anymore.

I'd be curious to see any screenshots if you have them. I noticed in the readme you support metatile editing (are those the 2x2 tiles?), which is cool. Does it also support editing metatile arrangements and section connections?

Chill out, he asked if there was interest and I was honest. There are a lot of NES game editors and you can only do so much with those games.

I always liked the format of Castlevania II (kinda like a Metroid-vania I guess) but the only thing that ever kept me from trying to make a hack or mod of it was how vapid the enemies and bosses were in comparison to other game in the series. It just feels like there's very little to work with there. From my perspective, if someone wanted to make a CVII styled game they're better off using Zelda II as a base. The downward and upward thrust mechanics would even make the controls a little more like Castlevania IV.

Sorry, don't know if that was helpful or not.

Super helpful! My own feeling was that this game doesn't have particularly good mechanics. I think I'll not write an editor for it unless I happen to have an inordinate amount of free time.

The mechanics are fine, it's the boss AI that is garbage.
(The enemies are fine, they just need better placement, IMO.)

If given the choice of an editor or hacks that add in decent bosses and a door object that forces you to fight them, I'd rather have the hacks.

Zelda II as a base for a CV hack seems like it would be interesting, but it also seems like it would be a lot of work to get it to really feel like a CV game seeing as at the very least you would need to add in the sub-weapons, whips, and body parts.

I remember seeing examples of boss improving hacks for CV2 a year or more back on this site, but maybe it was for a PC remake or something.
