Is there a best edition of Super Mario World?

This is not a request for anyone to build something, rather if someone has created (or which hack the community would consider) a "Best Edition", "Enhanced Edition", "Modern Edition" etc. of Super Mario World. Something that didn't make (major) changes to the levels but fixed bugs and added modern features to make a new baseline Super Mario World.

Any hacks come to mind?

Kind of a broad question. What is exactly is wrong with the game that needed to be fixed?

I don't know what you want by "modern" changes, but maybe the GBA version would be a consideration? (save anywhere, including power-ups and lives)

The GBA version has a lot of nice features, but I'd say it's far short of ideal.  There's a patch for the washed-out color palette, but I don't think anyone's restored the music, and there's the fact that Cape Mario and Fire Mario don't immediately become small when hit.  And of course that the viewing window is smaller than intended.

Some of the GBA features were ported to the SNES version in this hack, so that's a start.

Super Mario World MSU-1+ is basically the same idea as A Link to the Past Redux, although I'm not a huge fan of it. I don't like the arranged music they picked as much as the original SPC soundtrack, and I disagree with some of the "fixes" that were included—but check it out, because you might like it.

If you check SMWCentral.net, there's also a hack that reprograms SMW to use an SA-1 chip. It doesn't change the game at all, except it makes it run more efficiently, so there's no slowdown when lots of sprites are on the screen.

I've been wanting the same sort of thing for a long time, too.
Worst case scenario there are a tone of bugfix and enhancement patches at SMWCentral that will do the job. It'd just take some effort to get it all together into one mega patch.

If no one else does it, I'll eventually get around to at least consolidating all the bugfix patches into one hack.

I saw that too, and while it's very intriguing, GBA Super Mario World (aka Super Mario Advance 2) has no ereader support.

The Super Mario World MSU-1+ is very much along the lines of what I am thinking, though I agree that some of the changes (music) are more than I wanted.
Then again, I say that those changes go too far but at the same time I wouldn't mind if these got added

And I agree the GBA game had some good updates that I would like to implement but into the SNES game with the full-sized screen. Maybe it would be worth collecting some patches into a mega-patch (though I'd defer to Vanya's judgement and talent if he had the same idea).
