How to post pictures in forum posts
« on: December 15, 2018, 06:41:18 pm »
I've been hanging around this site for awhile, but this is such an embarrassingly noob question I have to put it on the Newcomer's board.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to add pictures to my forum posts so that they display on the forum thread. When I click the "insert image" button on the screen I'm writing text on, all it does is place "img / img" in the text and I don't know what to do with that. I've been putting up dropbox links forever as a result of not figuring this out but in a lot of cases I want people to see images just by reading the thread. This can't be that hard but I can be a little bit special sometimes.  :banghead:

This question is definitely a reflection of my skill level as a hacker, but that doesn't stop me from taking on ambitious projects now does it?  >:D

Thank you! I would have to load the image to the scratch pad link on the site rather than an external site like dropbox right?

Not sure how linking from dropbox works.

I just use imgur. There is a handy little program you can use called sharex that you can just drag a bunch of pictures to and it automatically uploads them for you. Then you just copy the link from the program. It shows thumbnails too.

Does dropbox even allow direct linking to images? All I ever see is images from places like imgur and photobucket.

FYI: I'm old fashioned, but I still think it's worth shelling out for your own web hosting account.

It's literally $2-$3/per month, plus a domain name for like $10-$15 per year. You get your own email accounts, and your own web space where you can post as many pages and images as you want. You're spending like $35-$50/per year and you only need to learn a little bit about setting up your own email accounts, and FTPing files. Free stuff like Gmail, and Imgur take the place of it well enough I suppose, but they always seem shady and limited compared to just rolling your own stuff on a normal webhost, but maybe that's just me.

I agree with Filler, having your own webspace is much more freeing, but for those who don't want to, there are a multitude of image hosters out there that will give you a link to post on the forum.

Whatever you do, DON'T use the scratchpad! :D There's a reason it's called that: it's for when you need something uploaded temporarily to the site, because it gets deleted soon after.

it still does, though you have to do some douchebaggery with the urls to make it work..

you just generate the "share link" as usual which is like this:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/yqzgvfrf1jt53ad/ULJM05410_00144.png?dl=0
then remove the ?dl=0 from the end and change www. to dl.

the resulting dl.**** url is hotlinkable
In PSP we trust.

Thank you everyone, there really is a science to this. I started using imgur and it seems the hotlink function isn't working with that either. When I copy the link to a romhacking forum post, it disappears when published. I imagine similar trickery is required for imgur...

I've never used Imgur in my life, but I just went there and looked at one of the images on the main page.

On Windows:
Right-click -> Copy Image Location

Then on the forum post I clicked the image icon which made these:
Code: [Select]
[img][/img]
Then I pasted the URL in-between the tags:
Code: [Select]

This is the result.

See? This is what happens when people have a little bit of natural technical talent.  :woot!:
I may not have much, but I have all of you though.

Usually I just upload images onto a private Discord channel and use the image links from there. (Which I can also upload any sort of files so long as they're less than 8MB.)
