Let's Translate Every Game Gear Game
« on: October 05, 2018, 11:39:09 am »
Now feels like the time to start a thread about my effort to dump scripts for every remaining Game Gear game with no English translation. I asked Spinner 8 if he'd make a list for the GG games, and I've been working from that. Spinner 8's Game Gear list is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gnCoa1tVBYu3B39VAom6bkTkrMxFWtmygVNUKGmsqes/edit?usp=sharing

I've noted below the scripts I've managed to dump, if they've been translated, and if someone has agreed to try hacking them back into the ROM.

I'm going to do as much of this myself as I can, but of course I welcome assistance with any games I have yet to dump scripts for, ones I say I'm struggling with in terms of dumping a script, or with translating any scripts that folks are interested in, and of course I'll need help inserting scripts for any games that don't explicitly say that someone is helping with insertion.

Legend:
Only needs title screen or other small graphical hack. I will not do this, so please help yourselves! 3
Translation unecessary. 4
Haven't really looked at it. 16
Looked at it but in-progress or having trouble. Help appreciated. 9
Script is dumped. In need of translation. 7
Translation in-progress. 3
Script is translated. Probably seeking help with insertion. 7
Hacking in progress. 1
Patch is released. 10

I encourage folks to chip-in, but feel free to follow along with the progress. I'll keep the OP updated as we go.
  • Aa Harimanada
    -
  • Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon S
    - Dumped and translated. Supper agreed to help with hacking.
    Patch released.
  • Buster Ball
     - Looks like it doesn't need any translation aside from one team name in katakana.
  • Car License
     - Made a table file and dumped the script.
  • Crayon Shin-chan - Taiketsu! Kantam Panic!!
     - Dumped and translated. Hacking in progress. Should be released soon.
    Patch has been released.
  • Doraemon - Noranosuke no Yabou
     - Dumped and translated.
  • Doraemon - Waku Waku Pocket Paradise
     -
  • Dunk Kids
     - No translation necessary. Only Japanese seems to be some tiny BG graphics on buildings when playing in Japan.
  • Eternal Legend - Eien no Densetsu
     - Made a table file and found some text. Looks like there are dictionary values referenced from F9-FA, possibly to FE. I could use some help dumping the script with these dictionary values.
Supper found a script for this game dumped by a Japanese hacker! This is in TheMajinZenki's hands currently.
    Patch is released.
  • Fray - Shugyou Hen
     - Dumped and translated. (Wasn't able to find and dump intro. Transcribed manually.)
  • From TV Animation - Slam Dunk - Shouri e no Starting 5
     - Made a table file for part of the text. Can't find the rest of the text so far. Made a table file for the intro text. Still need to check for other text encodings in the game.
  • Gamble Panic
     - Made a table file, but the script has a ton of weird codes in it, and I can't tell how it deals with diacritcs.
  • Gambler Jiko Chuushinha
     - This game doesn't seem to have a font or script per se. Translating this is more a matter of translating the sets of graphic tiles used in the menus and on-screen, as they are basically stored like they appear on screen. There's no real story or dialog to speak of.
  • Gear Stadium Heiseiban
     - Made a table file. Dumped what probably constitutes the dumpable text. Remaining text is more along the lines of graphics that will need editing.
  • GG Portrait - Pai Chen
     - This is just some digital video clips. Not really worth translating.
  • GG Portrait - Yuuki Akira
     - This is just some digital video clips. Not really worth translating.
  • Gojira - Kaijuu Daishingeki
     - Made a table file and dumped the script. Passed to TheMajinZenki for translation. There is a second text encoding that I still need to dump text for.
    The patch has been released.
  • Honoo no Toukyuuji - Dodge Danpei
     - Dumped the script.
  • Hyokkori Hyoutan-jima - Hyoutan-jima no Daikoukai
     - Dumped and translated the script.
  • Hyper Pro Yakyuu '92
     -
  • Ichidant~R GG
     -
  • J.League GG Pro Striker '94
     -
  • J.League Soccer - Dream Eleven
     -
  • Kaitou Saint Tail
     - Dumped and translated. Supper agreed to help with hacking.
  • Kenyuu Densetsu Yaiba
     - Made table files and dumped script.
  • Kishin Douji Zenki
     - Patch has been released.
  • Kuni-chan no Game Tengoku
     - Dumped and translated.
  • Kuni-chan no Game Tengoku Part 2
     - Dumped the script.
  • Madou Monogatari A - Dokidoki Vacation
     - Dumped the script. Translation has begun. Patch is released!
  • Madou Monogatari II - Arle 16-Sai
     - Dumped the script. Passed to TheMajinZenki for translation. As far as I know this is translated, and should be entering the hacking phase.
    Patch has been released.
  • Madou Monogatari III - Kyuukyoku Joou-sama
     - Dumped the script. Patch is released!
  • Magic Knight Rayearth
     - Patch has been released.
  • Magic Knight Rayearth 2 - Making of Magic Knight
     - Made table file and found first bit of text. Uses swap bytes so will need a custom dumper. I was wrong about a swap byte, it was just mixed encoding. I dumped a script.
  • Magical Taruruuto-kun
     - Only needs a title screen hack.
  • Moldorian - Hikari to Yami no Sister
     - Dumped the script.  Passed to TheMajinZenki for translation.
    Patch has been released.
  • Nazo Puyo
     - Not quite sure how they handle the text. I could use help with this.
  • Nazo Puyo 2
     - See Nazo Puyo.
  • Nazo Puyo Arle no Roux
     - I made a partial table file for this after finding the font in the ROM and noticing that it was not in alphabetical order. It uses bytes 0E and 0F to switch between 16px width and 8px width text so I'll need to write code to dump this which I'm not going to do right now. The text encodings for full and half width turned out to not overlap anyway, so I was able to use a single table file and dump a script. The script has been translated.
  • Neko Daisuki!
     -
  • Ninku
     - Made a table file and dumped a script. Passed to theMajinZenki for translation.
  • Ninku 2 - Tenkuuryuu e no Michi
     - Made a table file and dumped the script. Passed to theMajinZenki for translation.
  • Ninku Gaiden - Hiroyuki Daikatsugeki
     - I took a look at this but can't get anywhere. Need help dumping script.
  • Pet Club Inu Daisuki!
     -
  • Pocket Jansou
     - Made a table file and dumped the script.
  • Pro Yakyuu '91, The
     -
  • Pro Yakyuu GG League
     -
  • Pro Yakyuu GG League '94
     -
  • Quiz Gear Fight!!, The
     - Made a table file. I should be good to dump this script.
  • Shanghai II
     - No translation necessary. Watched play-through. All text is in English. Checked ROM and confirmed there is no Japanese script/alphabet. Note: It does say "天晴" at the end which means well done/bravo/splendid etc... It was left that way in other releases, but if someone wants to make a patch to edit those tiles to English be my guest.
  • Super Momotarou Dentetsu III
     - I took a look at this but I can't figure it out. Could use help dumping the script.
  • Taisen Mahjong HaoPai
     -
  • Taisen Mahjong HaoPai 2
     - Dumped the script.
  • Taisen-gata Daisenryaku G
     - I made two temp table files for the visible 8 and 16 width fonts. There is another narrow font that I can't find. Relative searches based on the tables have not yielded any hits however. Could us help with this. Can provide table files (sans byte values).
  • Tama & Friends 3 Choume Kouen - Tamalympic
     -
  • Tarot no Yakata
     - Looks like the font is in a non-standard order. I made a temp table file in what is seemingly the font order and tried using that for relative value searching, but was unable to get any valid hits that I can tell. Need help dumping this.
  • Tatakae! Pro Yakyuu Twin League
     -
  • Torarete Tamaruka
     - Dumped what seems like all dialog text (main and shop) but I'm missing the in-game messages that ask you to confirm if it's okay to continue. Not sure if I can find those.
  • World Derby
     - Thanks to Maxim on SMSPower the in-game checksum is bypassed and I've printed the full font to the dialog screen. I still need to make the table file from this which will take a little doing, but hopefully I can handle dumping the script from here. I've made a table file from the screen dumps for the 12x16 text. All that should be left is to ID the kanji in the 8x8 font, and hopefully the script will be ready for dumping.
  • Yu Yu Hakusho - Horobishimono no Gyakushuu
     - This only needs a title screen hack.
  • Zan Gear
     - Dumped and translated.

This is excellent news, and it's a great resource to have all this progress detailed in one place. Somehow it makes the task look more achievable. Thank you for all your efforts in dumping and translating the Game Gear library!

Well, at least we got Megami Tensei: Last Bible Special, and Lunar: Sanposuru Gakuen, which are from the Megaten franchise, and the Lunar franchise, respectively, fully translated already. At least those, plus a few others that are fully playable, are crossed out as well.

Yeah, we've had some good projects completed over the years. I worked on a couple projects for Game Gear in the past. However, it's only been a little over 1 Game Gear project completed every 2 years. I'd certainly like to see that number climb, and I figure you can't complete these projects without translated scripts, so we might as well dump and translate them so those willing/able to insert the scripts and finish up the projects can work on them.

This is excellent news, and it's a great resource to have all this progress detailed in one place. Somehow it makes the task look more achievable. Thank you for all your efforts in dumping and translating the Game Gear library!

It really doesn't look like that much when you list these all out. Of course, once you're putting in the work just getting to 20 starts to seem like quite an achievement let alone 60. :) Gotta start somewhere though. I know I won't even be able to dump all these scripts, so I hope some folks help out with the trickier ones.

FYI: Made a table file and dumped the script for Ninku 2: Tenkuuryuu e no Michi (忍空2 ~天空龍への道~). It's 32K formatted.

EDIT: Also made a table file and dumped the script for Pocket Jansou (ポケット雀荘). It's also about 32K formatted.

I dumped a script for Hyokkori Hyoutan-jima (ひょっこりひょうたん島), a game based on a 1960s televised puppet show. Some scant info about the show here (http://www.fanboy.com/2008/12/pop-up-gourd-island-classic-japanese-stop-motion-animation.html#more-6012). The script is only about 3K. The only other text in the game appears to be some menu text and some other misc static text that is graphics tiles stored mostly in order of how they appear on screen.

EDIT: FYI, I translated the script.

EDIT2: Made table files and dumped a script for Kenyuu Densetsu Yaiba a.k.a. Legend of the Swordmaster Yaiba (剣勇伝説YAIBA).

EDIT3: I'm on a roll. I made a table file and dumped a script for Doraemon: Noranosuke's Ambition (Doraemon Noranosuke no Yabou ドラえもん ノラのすけの野望).

EDIT4: Dumped and translated the script for Zan Gear.

Summary of the most recent updates:
  • I translated the (very short) script for Doraemon - Noranosuke no Yabou.
  • Crayon Shin-chan - Taiketsu! Kantam Panic!! is being hacked by Psyklax and is nearly finished.
  • I made a table file for the intro text for From TV Animation - Slam Dunk - Shouri e no Starting 5.
  • At some point I dumped a partial script for Godzilla and passed it to TheMajinZenki. This project is likely being hacked by Supper.
  • I dumped a script for Taisen Mahjong HaoPai 2.
  • At some point I dumped a partial script for Torarete Tamaruka.
  • I completed the table file for the 12x16 text in World Derby.
  • Supper found a complete script dump for Eternal Legend made by a Japanese hacker.

Shanghai on the Master System which only released in the west has that in Japanese too,  I'd suggest intentionally to emphasise the eastern nature of the game. So it should probably be left how it is on Shanghai II.

Thanks! Though the real congrats go to Supper, cccmar, and TheMajinZenki of course. I have to say, it feels good to have another game off the list, and a fun first English language patch released in 2019.

Sounds good to me. I can go either way on it honestly. I'll re-categorize that game for now.

Nice. Glad these are getting the translations they deserve. I mean I love some of them, but I wish I could understand the dialogue, especially parts of what's going on in the Sailor Moon S Game Gear game.

Then you'll be happy to know that the English translation patch for Sailor Moon S was released a few days after your post.

FYI: I've also dumped a script for Magic Knight Rayearth 2 - Making of Magic Knight.

Since you mentioned Madou Monogatari, RetroPals at some point played some of the PCE Arcade Card version and the console versions were heavily censored. (recent youtube upload but don't know how old the source stream was)
They say the PC-98 originals had a juxtaposition of cuteness and gore, but with the console versions they needed to make them more child-friendly.

I feel like that can be a loaded word. Like folks are going to start looking for the external source that forced Compile to sacrifice their lofty vision of blood and guts for unoffensive unicorns and rainbows. It's not the word's fault though, and it does in fact appear that the console versions are much less graphic in their depictions of violence.

When I checked out their video I was ready for them to be making a mountain out of a molehill for click-bait, but they had a surprisingly moderate perspective. I was on board until they questioned why Arle's face takes up 25% of the screen and I was like, "IT'S THE HP BAR YOU %$#(*%$!"

Congrats to Supper, TheMajinZenki, and Cccmar on the release of Sorcery Saga II (Madou Monogatari II)!

Thanks for your help with it! It was a nice game to work on, even if I ended up dragging it out longer than I meant to.

While some of the more violent material was removed in this port, yes, I'd say that's much less interesting than the differences in gameplay. To the best of my knowledge, pretty much every port of the Madou Monogatari games varies considerably from the releases on other platforms -- the original MSX2 version of this game has different dungeon layouts from the later PC-98 version, and the Game Gear version changes them even more. Gore aside, the home computer releases are pretty different games, so I think there's plenty of value in translating this version. Plus the artstyle is less... weird. What made them decide on a 7-head proportion?

And I understand there's a translation in the works for the PC-98 versions, for anyone interested in them (I am!), but I'm not involved with that.

My pleasure. :) Speaking of dragging things out longer than one means to... I'm trying to come back around to working on Bahamut Senki. Sometimes I let a moment of fatigue or frustration put me off of something and that definitely happened in this case. Honestly I think I let my own insecurities get the better of me for whatever reason. I looked over what I'd done and it's all fine. I did a little more on it and it went well. I'm not making any promises, but I'm planning to keep going with that. I'd still like to see that project finished so we have another Genesis/Mega Drive project released.

SkyeWelse seemed to imply as much on Twitter a couple years ago anyway. I really don't know much about the series.‏ It seems like a rabbit hole that gets deeper the further you go.
