I even want to take Chicken Knife’s decensored efforts and put my own spin on it by making the crosses tridents just for extra authenticity.
I had hoped that would be something you would end up doing for this!

Yeah I’ve already done menu work to increase the space for Battle menus so I have room for ATTACK and DEFEND. Should be just a matter of fixing the length.

Man, I’m going 0-2 on missing the simple stuff XD. My initial thought was “I’ll have to see if I can find something on old usage. Maybe a medieval etymology site or something...” Sometimes the simple solution is best.

I believe I stated in the news post for the DW1 release that I see these hacks as a sort of alternate universe where it was localized as DQ, like it is now, right from the start. I even want to take Chicken Knife’s decensored efforts and put my own spin on it by making the crosses tridents just for extra authenticity.

I know people are nostalgic for the old terms, but I”m all in on getting these done for all 3 versions of the trilogy first and I have little free time as it is. If I get more people who want a hack like that, sure.

I'll be quiet... o_o

It's just that i can't seem to find any authentic custom box art that reflects this alternate universe.

just out of curiosity.

When u mentioned Chicken Knife tweaking the logo for DQ1 in the v1.3 release. Does it have anything to do with removing your credentials in the title screen, just to fit in with this alternate reality u mentioned b4?

I'm curious cause the title screen I mentioned is in the first post of another version of this forum from woodus.com, and I'm not sure if the picture came before or after the post was updated on 04/20 of the same year.

Plus I would like to see the hack pretend to act like the real thing, since the product comes from an alternate reality and all.

Nah, Chicken Knife conveyed to me that he's always tweaking his pixel work to look JUST right. In fact I think he tweaked it again after that update. Adding my credit to the title screen was one of the last things I did before release (I think IIRC) and despite my looking at this project as an "alternate universe", it's still a romhack at the end of the day and adding my screen name was just for credit which most people do around here and to curb potential unauthorized distribution (for profit or passing it off as some kind of leaked Virtual Console release or something).

Edit: Yeah, I just remembered. The screen above was an early draft of the logo. The final version moved the QUEST letters over a tile.

As I am playing through the newly released Dragon Quest Builders 2, during the game (I will try not to spoil the circumstances) you fight an enemy called a Wrecktor, and it made me realise that the enemy you have as Whackolyte should be called Wrecktor, according to Dragon-Quest.org it seems that the remakes replaced the Wrecktor with a slightly different enemy called a Whackolyte, but for the classic NES version he should be Wrecktor, especially to honor the connection to DQB2.

I'm away from my pc right now, but I'm pretty sure BOTH are in game. I'll double check though. Yeah, I actually have DQB2 loaded on my Switch ready to go, I'm just trying to get through some of my backlog first. I was hoping to have this done before the release but now I'm thinking it would be good to see if they updated anything anyway. I'm really curious how they'll do the past DQ worlds bit for XI S, I'm thinking if I can maybe finally update that Nester cameo line in DQ1 with something more DQ relevant.

Sorry to keep correcting you on things that aren't incorrect but you're right, the monster named Wrecktor is named あくましんかん in japanese and the Monster named Whackolyte is named じごくのつかい in japanese, this matches up with DQB2, however in my defense their palattes have swapped! in DQB2 Wrecktor now has green skin and a red cape and Whackolyte now has purple skin and a green cape, sorry once again.

I know how important it is for a hacker to credit him/herself to differentiate his/her product from the official one.

But a thought just occurred to me.

As a neutral option, for those who want to play a hack that feels like the real thing, and for the hacker who want to credit him/herself in his/her work, why not place his/her username in the end credits, and be credited for the work of Translation or Localization?

also, I know u're focused on translating the NES Trilogy at the moment. But are you sure you want to leave behind the fourth installment all alone and frightened? X333

You could complete the NES Quadrilogy.

I just started playing Builders 2 myself and noticed there's a Prestidigitator (black robe) and they call him a Legerdeman (red robe) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So far, I'm not seeing anything worth updating. For a "sequel" to DQ2, it's kinda funny how they mostly drop the Olde English speak. You even have Brittany who talks with modern jargon (fam, GOAT, lit, etc). Only thing worth considering is that the gremlins talk with a lisp.

Actually already did both :)

I'd definitely love to go back and do IV as well as do other games that need it like V SNES, but I really want to do all three versions of the trilogy first (mostly because I still need to RIP those scripts first and they work differently compared to I-III mobile).

Oh boy, a little off topic but, the Nintendo Direct today announced the Dragon Quest Trilogy coming to switch! .... well the Japanese direct did... which I don't want to be negative, but that sure seems like a NO for English speaking territories... Again...

Anyway, no pressure! GOOD LUCK!

EDIT - never mind, it is coming out. lol.

Glad to see you're still alive after posting that Fortune Street update.

Also, is it okay if you give us a status report on RE-Quest?

Sorry for the delay! I'm a bad procrastinator and there'd be times where I'd just take a long break after coming across something daunting (and tbf that Fortune Street was waiting EVEN LONGER). But the delays were way too frequent and I'm sorry about that. There was a LOT of time spent messing around with the ASM (I can't thank abw enough!) so that plural enemy lines read correctly (Like having the game say Mummy Boys instead of Mummy Boies) and the battle lines reflect modern DQ's usage of present tense and even the monster counts are handled like they are in the modern ports) but the last couple months were all about graphics. I suck at graphics so it was something I just kept putting off. And the last couple days I finally dove in!

As said previously I wanted to put as much detail as I could and it would be weird if the game had the updated translation but the weird Dragon Warrior exclusive Ghost, Stars and Healer graphics. And I couldn't JUST throw in the Japanese graphics because that wouldn't be quite right either! So my version of DW2 will do something unique and it's turned out quite well if I do say so myself!

Yep that's the Japanese Priest and Coffin graphics, but with a little extra editing. For comparison:

Japanese DQ2:
American DW2:

For the Coffin Graphics I used DQV DS as a reference:

And maybe a little bit of DQ2 Mobile/Switch but I don't think there's enough pixels to really do it with short thick crosses but I made them a couple pixels shorter

The Priest no longer holds a cross, but instead has a little cross on his hat to match the DQ2 Mobile/Switch versions (I guess it's a tiny enough detail SE didn't bother "fixing")

The little church icons comes from my mobile rip which has HORRIBLE scaling issues

I did what I could, but what do you think? Do you think I started the fork too low? Even having one pixel higher seemed too high imo. Edit: Looking at it now, I do believe I made the horizontal beam too thin.

So with all of that I bet you're expecting more delays with nothing to show. But, no I DO have a beta patch for those who want to try it out. This should have MOSTLY EVERYTHING but Title Screen graphics and credits done so have at it!

Everything looks great! Curious about your thoughts on the title screen. DQ2 Delocalized DRAGON QUEST title with the new subtitle in the lower right? Or do you have any other ideas? I haven't made any updates to the DQ2 title sequence in a while (unlike my DQ1 title which will have subtle changes in the new update I publish this week.)

I'm also curious what you want to do with the animation of the marching heroes in the title sequence. I am thinking of screwing with palettes to make Cannock / Samaltria's hair reddish brown instead of green in the full sized frames. Didn't get anywhere in my initial attempts to reassign those palettes. Besides my different Midenhall/Laurasia head frames, I fixed a lot of animation bugs, and you may want to include those.

This is just an idea. Why not redesign the characters in the intro to look more like their Toriyama-esque counterparts?

Thrilled to see this project isn't dead!!

As usual I've jumped in and have been taking a look.

Dracky has his name as Silvapithacus (don't know if Silvapithacus is called Dracky)

The princess's introduction has a long block of text that likely should be broken up.

I don't know if I was asking for this glitch by dumbly naming my character AAAA
but the other characters being named 0000rd and 0000de might be a problem, though the names might have grown on me already lol.

And one last glitch that seems emulator specific, I usually use the Mesen core on Retroarch and when you get to the text crawl at the beginning of a new game it causes this visual glitch on all black backgrounds.

If you just save and reset the game and start from after the text crawl everything is normal.
I also tested it on the FCEUX core in Retroarch and it didn't do this, however it still seemed to glitch out a little bit. about halfway through it briefly flashed the beginning of the text crawl and then resumes, not something one could screenshot however.
I'll keep plugging away at this to see if there is anything else! Thanks for keeping at it!

Wow those are GREAT! I really did want to make covers myself from your posts a while back. I was going to use those SNES Remake arts since they were portrait oriented like NES boxes, but I really like yours more. Having the original taglines is such a fantastic touch! And no worries I%u2019m not a bit upset with anyone, more myself than anything with how much I put it off. But I%u2019m fired up and going to finish this!

Quote

Laserlambert! Good to see you back! I%u2019m amazed you can just breeze through this so quickly. As for this, this is what I get for putting it off. I switched some of the early monsters with some of the later monster names for testing. In case you%u2019re wondering, Silvapithicus is the longest one word monster name with a whopping 13 letters. You might see that 2 and think %u201CCan%u2019t you just add a space?%u2019 Short answer: No  Long Answer: Technically, I can by making the window longer, but then it sticks out horribly underneath the dialog.

Quote

Huh, I%u2019m at a loss here. That%u2019s clearly supposed to be Sigurd and Isolde. This uses abw%u2019s new ASM tweak that makes the names random as opposed to based on the Hero%u2019s name. Hopefully it%u2019s just from some mismanaged tables.

Quote
And one last glitch that seems emulator specific, I usually use the Mesen core on Retroarch and when you get to the text crawl at the beginning of a new game it causes this visual glitch on all black backgrounds.

Okay, I know the problem. The lines for the intro crawl can%u2019t be too long. I probably forgot to change it after figuring it out. Had no idea it messed up other emulators, I just got extra flickering in FCEU.

Just one thing I%u2019ll ask laserlsmbert, if you can, please keep an eye out for dialog when an enemy strikes first. I could%u2019ve sworn I caught the dialog not displaying the right string when I had an enemy ambush (kinda like how the Gold Obtained string changes when a defeated enemy drops an item, it%u2019ll use the Gold found in a chest string) I might%u2019ve just not had the ASM and strings set properly when I saw it but it%u2019s hard to recreate.

Edit: Okay what the heck is going on with my apostrophes?

Well, that's what I did with Midenhall/Laurasia's head. I thought it looked ok, and I didn't really feel the need to redesign the bodies of the two male princes. Moonbrooke is already spot on as far as the Japanese art. Could I be persuaded to work on the other two princes more? Possibly, eventually.

btw Chicken Knife, I meant to ask you, a while back in November of 2019 (can you believe it's been a year and a half since we started DQ2 crazy, huh?)You sent me a link to a patch (version 50 I think) that had JUST the logo, no subtitle and the trio graphic improvements. But of course the link is broken now. I don't suppose you still have a version of that lying around do you? It'd just be a lot quicker and easier to just apply the logo and other graphic changes without having to clean up the Gods of Evil subtitle.

Also laserlambert, Pretty sure I was able to fix the text crawl as I noticed a little bit of flickering as a couple of the lines were a tiny bit too long (each line should only be 28 letters long including spaces and now I have ZERO flickering. Still need to figure out what's causing those 0000s in the party member names though.

@Choppasmith,

I'll dig around tonight to see if I have a patch for that still. Old files tend to get cleaned up from my drop box every now and then unfortunately. Unlike the DQ1 and DQ3 title screens, nothing in the code really interferes with redrawing elements of the DQ2 title. It would probably only take a few minutes to replace the subtitle with the original Part 2 graphics or just replace them with background tiles.

I didn't have any compatibility problems whatsoever with the randomized naming patch. That's an odd problem.

Seems like the right text displays when you are ambushed --- "The [Enemy] Attacks! [Main Character] was not yet set for battle!"
Playing further I see some of the characters still have glitched text I pointed out in the last page, notably the many characters in Dirkandor. I also noticed that this time the fortune teller in Dirkandor also freezes the game when you say yes to him.

EDIT:
Big game breaking glitch found. At the Fire Shrine where you find the Sun Sigil, if you examine the tile to collect the sun sigil the screen becomes a garble of color and the game freezes.
Tested on multiple Emulators same result.

EDIT again: Found a monster named Saberecat, it should probably be Sabrecat or maybe Sabercat, not sure.

EDIT once again: The same exact glitch for the Sun Sigil exists for the Water Sigil. something about collecting these sigils from floor tiles I would guess.

EDIT: Found a few characters with unbroken walls of text, with a close quote open quote in mid paragraph that could use a break.

EDIT: Same glitch exists for the soul sigil in the cave to Rendarak, that one is in a treasure chest, so the only collectible sigils are the ones given from conversations with characters, the king in Dirkandor gives the moon sigil and the Gremlins give the star sigil, all others are unobtainable.
