Quote from: Chicken Knife on August 28, 2022, 02:11:22 PMWell, I can definitely confirm that we didn't introduce or change anything with this particular game mechanic, other than retranslating the text. It is certainly an odd mechanic, but keep in mind that these were the formative years for JRPGs, and genre norms weren't exactly established yet.

As far as the text "low level" vs "novice," I can see your point that the mention of "low-level" is slightly less ambiguous, but our main goal was to be faithful to the language of the Japanese version. If you go through DQ2 for instance, a famously cryptic game, there were times that our renderings made objectives clearer, and there were other times that we made objectives a little more obscure. We've only rarely made "improvements" to the Japanese text, reserving those for scenarios where there was an unequivocal flaw in the original text.

We appreciate you playing through DQ3 Delocalized and providing feedback, but unfortunately, we are inclined to stick with our translation in this case.

Right, obviously the game mechanics are the same, I'm just saying the original version seemed to recognise this was unusual and call extra attention to it in the script. Now I don't actually know Japanese so maybe I'm just confused here, but looking at the romanisation and comparing to other lines in the game script, レベル sure looks like an explicit reference to character level?

You are likely correct about it being a deliberate hint. nejimakipiyo went back and took a look at the Japanese, and yes, you are right that the most direct translation would be something like: "Even a merchant whose level is low would be an asset."

What almost certainly happened is that I found this to be an awkward line and "polished" it into what we currently have, with neither of us noting the hint. You've convinced me to revise at this point. Thank you for going the extra mile to make your case here. The change will be in the next update, which will include a few other important text fixes.

Love your work! Do you have any plans to translate the manuals?  Also you guys have a discord or hang out on one relevant to your work here?

Thank you! As for the manuals, we didn't, but in the words of nejimakipiyo, "That could be interesting." Do you or anyone else know where we could obtain scanned images of the Japanese manuals?

We don't have any public content on discord, although we have used it for project work. @TranslationQst is our twitter.

I know of this link that was posted weeks ago at the Dynamic Designs forum: https://gamemanual.midnightmeattrain.com/archive/category/%E3%82%B9%E3%83%BC%E3%83%91%E3%83%BC%E3%83%95%E3%82%A1%E3%83%9F%E3%82%B3%E3%83%B3?page=0

Also, there are lots that can be found at archive.org if you use "game manual, snes manual, manuals, setsumeishoo (this last one written in Japanese, obviously  ), etc" as keywords.

Didn't manage to find the game manual for Shin Momotaro Densetsu, though...

nejimakipiyo

I managed to find the Japanese manuals on the Woodus site, and saved I-III. I like the idea of translating these as a companion to our Delocalized hacks. Can't put a timeframe on it right now, though, as we are currently busy with a different DQ project.

Hello, I've been trying to play through Dragon Quest 3 Delocalized, however I've found that it does not battery save. I've tried the unpatched ROM and it works, and I've tried both Dragon Quest 1 and 2 Delocalized and they both save. I'm on Mac so I've tried in both Nestopia and FCEU through OpenEmu, but no luck. The only patch installed is the base patch. Does anybody have suggestions on how to save? Thanks in advance. Edit: Tried more roms and it worked.

Sounds like it may have been an altered or corrupted ROM. Glad to hear you resolved it.

Hello.  I plan to Let's Play this excellent patch at some point, mainly due to the Parry-Fight bug fix and the improved text.

But, I do have a question.  Would it be possible to have an additional "Localized Item Names" patch, as well?

I always do my LPs as Walkthroughs—"Do this and that to beat this game as fast and conveniently as possible"... And I'm worried that stuff like "Kusanagi Blade" (instead of Orochi Sword) or "Shooting Star Bracelet" (instead of Meteorite Armband) will get confusing for anyone playing along on the base localization.

It's not a huge deal, of course.  But if you're able to do so, I would appreciate it.  Thank you!

jmoral14

I was curious - would my save carry over to a later version of the patch? I'd love to try this out ASAP, but as was said a few comments before, we should be expecting a new update and would hate to lose my progress.

MD_Prometh

Are there any plans to add some tweaks to Torneko no Daibouken: Fushigi no Dungeon? The current patch doesn't translate some of the text.

Also, is it possible to provide an update on the retranslation of FFVI?

Chicken Knife

I see that I missed some posts on this thread. I have the thread set to alert me, and I know that I used to get email alerts, but that hasn't seemed to be happening for a while unfortunately.

Thank you for the kind words. As far as the request for a localized item name version, that would require a lot of careful rework, not just to the item names themselves, but to the general text that references item names. If we had Erdrick's equipment again, then we'd have to have Erdrick as the hero of legend, and then we'd also have to have options for all the localized character names. It wouldn't stop. I hope you can appreciate us drawing the line at spell name options, only because the requests were so frequent. I'm glad you appreciate the bug fixes, but those were intended to be icing on the cake, not the main event. If you do the let's play, I hope that some of your players are willing to try this version!

An SRAM, natural save file would carry over just fine. A save state file probably would not. There is some stuff to include in an update, but I'm holding off for now. There is some work on a related project being done, and I have a strong feeling that more updates will hit the NES version as a result. Nothing is major, and I think we are best off consolidating the updates.

No plans to speak of for us working on Torneko games. It would be very unlikely, as none of us are particularly into them.

As for the FFVI retranslation, you'd have to reach out to Hairy Hen. We haven't discussed it in months.

I wanted to know if you intend to make a version of Dragon Quest 2 with the restoration of exp and gold values gained. I like a lot of challenges and it would be more challenging, it would be good for hardcore fans

Chicken Knife

Alexxxkkkjh,

Great question. That is actually going to be included in our next update. I already have all the gold / exp values changed, and it will be an optional feature. The only reason I'm sitting on it is because I'm also trying to include optionally reverting the Rondarkia/Rhone priest's routine so that he doesn't automatically revive dead characters, as was the case in the Japanese version. Having this change in force will cause the player to have to make a lot more trips through our favorite cavern.

Abw was helpful in providing some clarifying details to his disassembly, but I still have to do a bit of ASM work, and that's heavy lifting for  someone at my technical level as a hacker. I'll try my best to push through it in coming weeks.

TacoBell-kun

Do you have any plans to translate the Zenithia trilogy on the Nintendo DS? I'm not fond of the accents in the games' localizations, and I hate the censorship of puff-puffs even more.

I know that the 4th game has the issue of party chat being unavailable in the non-Japanese releases, but that shouldn't be an issue for the 5th and 6th games.

Chicken Knife

Sorry, we don't.

A: I've slowed down a lot with this stuff. Hard to say how much is coming in the future.
B: I'm not a fan of the DS versions. Nothing wrong with them, but I prefer original versions or console based remakes. I don't work very effectively when I'm not a fan of what I'm working on.

MD_Prometh

I wouldn't be against a script port of the DS version of V to the PS2 version, as the current PS2 translation script is a little on the dry side.

On that note, I'm surprised IV-VIII do not have console / Steam ports.

Travio

Hi! I've recently bought DQ3 JPN and I haven't been able to find a single English translation for it. I tried applying the delocalized hack with it considering dw3 is pretty much the same, but it wouldn't boot, I'm assuming from conflicts with the title screen or some bugfix.

I did try a translation patch and it worked fine with the JPN version though, so would you happen to have an ips of JUST the translation, spell, and monster name changes somewhere? It would be greatly appreciated! I do understand if it's already baked and would take too long to pull apart, in that case thanks anyway! I love that people still work on these games.

Sorry, but doing a translation only of the Japanese version would be a mammoth task. And there's no way to break out our retranslation of the US version in a way that could be successfully applied to the Japanese version. Apples to oranges.

**General update

I think I'll push out an update for DQ2 Delocalized that swaps monster stats to their Japanese counterparts, with an optional revert patch. I was trying to also incorporate turning off the auto-revive function from the Rondarkia/Rhone priest, and thank you to abw for sending some guidance, but it's too involved for the amount of time and brainpower I can commit right now.
