Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 Ultimate (GBC)
« on: July 26, 2018, 02:23:11 am »

This hack is essentially DWM2 NG+ for those that have played this game many times in the past and would love a new challenge. Changes have been made to monster encounters throughout the story to provide much more variety and difficulty. Many aspects have been made more convenient to facilitate grinding for the dramatic jumps in difficulty.

If you already have a completed save file this can offer great post-game grinding and loot. If you have not tried this series but enjoy a challenging Pokemon-like experience, you should give it a try .

I have submitted hack v1.03 as of 28 September 2018. Please give it a try and let me know if anything seems like a bug!
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4103/

If a file is started with Tara, you will remain as Tara if you load the save with the Cobi version.
The Tara version is not fully compatible, but you can start up a save and then continue with the Cobi version.

---------------------------------------------------------
      Map and Encounter Changes
---------------------------------------------------------
Changes have been made to nearly all prebuilt monster data.
Starting monster (Now Gismo with Heal)
      All Story key Monsters
      Mimic Monsters
      Boss Battles
      Arena monsters
      Random Master Monsters
      Tiny Medal Rewards

Changes to monster regions to encourage exploration. Monsters are typically grouped by species to improve memory of their habitats.
Monsters available have been dramatically increasedery few monsters need to be bred or found in random keys:
      Oasis 11 -> 30
      Pirate 36 -> 53
      Ice 39 -> 52
      Sky 48 -> 59
      and more!

---------------------------------------------------------
            Monsters and Gameplay
---------------------------------------------------------
Game now starts at Lv 5 instead of Lv 1.
Monster stats are built using in-game stat growth tables and a custom lv 1 formula.
This increases with each region to promote increased challenge and provide great breeding options.
Some monsters have utility skills they do not learn naturally. (eg. Heal, Whistle, Outside, Pheremone)
Custom EXP formula to ensure the challenges are worth it.
Many monsters have had their experience requirement rank reduced.
Out of a total 32 ranks, ultra rare monsters were reduced by 2, rare monsters were reduced by 4, and other high Exp req monsters reduced by 6.
Base form Lord monsters can be found and recruited in some story key worlds.
Most boss battles now have 3 enemies
Fewer boss fights have unrecruitable monsters some of which require meat.
Some monsters are uncatchable until they have been bred first.

---------------------------------------------------------
            NPC and Item Changes
---------------------------------------------------------
The number of uses has been increased for Antidote, Laurel, WarpWing, WarpStaff, ExitBell and Books.
The effectness has been improved for Herbs, Lovewater, Potion and Meats.
All Sirloin prices have been set to 1000G (No price gouging!)
Seeds can now be purchased at a post-game store.
Tiny Medals can be purchased at a post-game store and also sold for 10000G (No loss.)
Staves, seeds and equipment now sell for more.
Dialogue may be altered to provide hints. These will begin wil Star instead of the typical '*:'

---------------------------------------------------------
            Skill Changes
---------------------------------------------------------
Family Cuts reduced from 3 to 1 MP
Revive reduced from 20 to 12 MP
Revive had its Int req reduced
   Outside now costs 0 MP
   Informer was replaced with Outside
FireSlash changed to the same element as FireBolt
MultiCut changed to the same element as MegaMagic
Gigaslash had its Int req removed and its HP, MP and Atk req increased

---------------------------------------------------------
            Breeding Changes:
---------------------------------------------------------
For these I started with the current hack by BCRobert. From there I made some changes.
   These are BCRobert's changes.
Slime (Monster) x Bigroost = Wonderegg
Slime (Family) x Watabou = PetitBou
Slime (Family) x Warubou = PetitBou
Dragon (Monster) x Aquahawk = Skydragon
      Vampirus x Azurile = Lamia
      Almiraj x Aquahawk = Bigroost
      Almiraj x Kitehawk = Bigroost
      Hammerman x ArmyAnt = Gohopper
      Hammerman x StagBug = Gohopper

   The following are my changes
Dragon (Monster) x DarkMate = Dimensaur
Puppetor x Devil (Family) = Sabreman
      Kitehawk x Beast (Family)= Bigroost
      Foohero x Darck = Warubou
Warubou x Slime (Monster) = Watabou
      Blizzardy x CloudKing = Lamia
      Pheonix x CloudKing = Lamia
      ZapBird x CloudKing = Lamia
      Beastnite x PomPomBom = Copycat
      Beastnite x FoxFire = Copycat

---------------------------------------------------------
      Arena and Random Key Changes
---------------------------------------------------------
   New monsters for ranks Kiddie-S.
After beating S Rank for the first time, a large variety of tough monsters are available to challenge.
Rewards have high odds to award TinyMedals, MeteOrbs, Seeds and Magic Keys

Greatly increased odds of obtaining a higher level key.
The Number of Random Key types has been reduced to improve the odds to ~6% for each key.
Keys now available are the 11 Family keys, Castle (Dragon+Slime), Land (Bug+Plant), Jungle (Beast+Bird), Star (Material+Water) and Hell (Zombie+Devil)
Odds of obtaining Family Keys increase with the level of your party leader. Lord keys have a 5% change of being found with a party leader Lv 80+
Random masters have extremely high level monsters including catchable bosses!
Some monsters in random keys have had their base XP dramatically increased similar to Metaly.

---------------------------------------------------------
      Changes to Post Game
---------------------------------------------------------
Prince Kameha and Terry now provide a difficult post-game challenge.
Elf, Traveler and Lonely world and are extremely difficult with very desirable monsters.
This Brawn key obtained in game has been replaced with the Lonely Key (Typically Tara only.)
It can only be obtained by speaking to to the Old Man with Darck in your party.
Darck can now only be recruited from the Traveler Key.
Milayou is the ultimate boss fight with stats beyond 999!
Using a cheat tool or by trading, one can obtain the Brawn, Baffle and Soul Keys.
These now contain tough boss challenges with a promotional event prize monster at the top.

------------------------------------------------------------
         Future plans
------------------------------------------------------------
The following are incomplete or I was not able to determine how to change the necessary values.
I couldn't change Gismo's sprite in the story sequence..
Unable to add additional characters to the Medal Man's Rewards. You should be able to know what they are despite the missing letters.
Unfortunately I have not determined how to change boss tile sprites on the map before the fight :S
   Changes to post-game breeding options.

Nifty. Looking forward to seeing what's new. I've beaten the original several times back in the day. Consider this pressure you were looking for. If you do need another beta tester, I have an Everdrive and a GB Light. If not, good luck. We're all counting on you.

May I ask what your custom formula for lv1 stats is? Tbh it always bothered me how easy it was to hit 999 on every stat on every monster. Seems pointless for a monster to "specialize" in a stat when you can max them all anyway.

My formula only applies to wild monsters and since it boosts them considerably, it may make what you are talking about easier. However the point was to make enemies much more difficult to account for how easy it is to get high stats.

To create wild monsters I take that monster's stat ranks 0-31, then equalize a pre-existing example of that monster to a similar range. I sum those to create the level 1 monster then add the monster's natural growth to raise its level. On harder stages I take those level 1 stats and multiply them. The hardest stages involve a multiplier of 5.

At some point the stats of wild monsters will force you to focus more on skills and tactics.

Lol, minor trivia that I do all my work in Excel  or rather it does the work for me.

Ah. I was hoping you meant breeding stats. But either way a difficulty patch for this game was sorely needed. The Joker games are okay but I consider DWM2 the last "true" member of this series.

Mainly because the islands just don't have the feel of a classic Dragon Quest world map. :/

It's likely I will need to make some tweaks to better balance the difficulty level.
I'm looking for more testers that can give me feedback on each of the story keys and the arena.

I am playing this hack right know, and right know I am in the Ice World.

About the difficulty:
The first boss was way too difficult, I lost counts for how much I abused save states in that fight.
And the same applies to the first arena battle.
Some random encounter monsters are too strong.

I also noticed that you changed mimic chests for Copycat, which is a odd choice but not something that bothers me. The problem is, I encountered this chest in the Pirate World and was able to recruit the Copycat with 2 Ribs, and he was at level 99. Though I decided not to recruit it, because its way too OP at this point of the game.
And I dont think there was a need to add so much monsters in the worlds.

Quote
Fewer boss fights have unrecruitable monsters some of which require meat.
I am confused, does this mean that there bosses which are recruitable with meat?

I made the hack with the intention to make areas that you must be cautious about and require more work to capture the monsters. I found the original games don't really matter who you are fighting from region to region. I always seem to overlevel my team in DQ games that I play, so I wanted to make something very tough.

The first boss is meant to give you a taste of the difficulty I was going for. That fight is not that difficult, depending on your tactics. A combo of Sap/Upper is honestly OP throughout most of the game. Also, if you get in the habit of using direct commands you're gonna have a bad time. Regardless I've an added an equip to the Oasis store in the latest release that should help with that fight.

Sorry about the first arena battle. That wasn't supposed to be that hard, I've reduced this in the lastest release.

The fact that you encountered Copycat is very disappointing. The game totals your levels to determine which mimic you encounter. I guess you do not need to be high level to encounter the final mimic which is CopyCat. I will have to see if I can change what level each mimic is encountered at as there are 7.

While it is level 99, its stats are not that impressive. In this game a high level monster isn't all that great, since you'll want to give it skills and pluses. It is just good breeding material.

Yes, some bosses can be recruited with meat. This mostly includes their helpers or minibosses that don't auto-join.
(None of the evil doers in Ice are recruitable)

The first boss fight was very difficult for me, even after spending more than half an hour I had trouble beating him. He deals ridiculous damage, that fight was completly luck based. Its nice that you added Equipment to the Oasis store, but for how much is the equipment sold? Because Gold is really scarce in the first world.

As for Copycat his HP and MP stats were nothing to be laughed, the rest of his stats were not impressive.

You sure made the foreign masters ridiculously powerful, I stand no chance against them. I am guessing you intended the Magic Key Worlds to be explored post-game. Since I am in the Sky world right now and they kick my ass handily.

Also do you have any plans making a hack like this for DWM? Would be really nice to see a hack like this for the first game.

I find it odd that you had trouble with him, but not "HoodSquid" or "BombCrag" or the final boss of the ice world. He likely requires a team of level 16 to beat. In 3 playthroughs of that level it beat me ~5 times. Still I should probably look at the XP reward of everyone again. The newest release also fixes the healing values of Herbs. They should help a lot. If you need gold, sell a TinyMedal.

Random Masters were intended to be somewhat post-game. They have very tough teams, though it should depend on the key world you are in.  Lesser keys shouldn't have very tough masters. I might have made it a bit to easy to acquire higher level keys. This is based on the level of the first member of your party.

I was actually planning to make a hack of the first game when I found all the info on how to hack this game. I would have to find all the hex values myself, but I might pursue it in the future.

I just beat the main game, and none of the bosses gave me any trouble except the last battle against Darck‘s henchmen(and the first boss as I mentioned before). The random encounters gave me more trouble than the bosses did, even the final boss(Dark Drium) had less than 1000hp.
It seems like to me you set the Boss stats based on level, which would explain why they all have so low hp.

And I‘ve got to mention I don‘t like that you changed the  boss fights with completly different monsters, especially the last three bosses in the storyline. These changes are really jarring.

Another thing I didn‘t like is that you made some really rare monsters as random encounters. For example Rosevine, Metalking, Darkhorn and even freaking Sidoh(which I recruited with 1 Sirloin). I don‘t know if those monsters are encountered only once in this hack, because I havent seen them the second time. But still it feels really wrong to have those monsters as random encounters.

By the way, where can I find Skydragons? I seem to remember encountering them in the Sky World, but can‘t remember exactly where they were.

Thanks for playing all the way through. I was thinking some bosses after Ice likely needed their HP raised. Monsters are regioned by ATK not level.

I want to be able to change story and sprites to make the boss changes less jarring, but I'm not able to do that at this time. I wanted real showdowns for the main story. Mudou and Darck are lame.

Many rare monsters you can find cannot be caught until they are bred first. Sidoh is supposed to be quite rare, but I don't know how well the RNG works. There was a bug in the older versions. I may have to increase the number of monsters that cannot be caught until bred as well as make them harder to catch.

Sky Dragon is now in the Sky World monster tower at the start of the map.

If you want to make this game somewhat challenging, you should give all the bosses at least twice, if not thrice the amount of hp they have. This also applies to the monster master battles like Kameha, Terry etc. Just to give an example, Darck has 4000hp in the original game, while the final boss in this hack less than 1000hp. You can use this guide for comparison sake. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/gbc/525414-dragon-warrior-monsters-2-cobis-journey/faqs/14383

Changing the normal sprites should be feasible to do, but Darck and Mudo have their own big animated sprite which is not possible to change.
Except there was no showdown for me, because the bosses went down so fast with their low hp. And if you wanted a less lame Mudou and Darck battlem, you could have given those bosses; better stats, movesets, two strong monsters to add. Darck's henchman having boss monsters is also not a good decision. Those changes really distrupt the flow of the story.

Forgot to mention that I also encountered a wild Darck.
Well, I know that those monsters need to be breed first before you can catch them, though funnily enough this doesn't apply to Darck and Sidoh.
But my point is such monsters shouldn't be that easy to get. I mean you already made so many strong monsters so easily available. From a game design point of view, it's a bad decision to have thoses really rare monsters as random encounters in the main story key worlds.
I am almost sure those monsters appear only once in the game, and those monsters appear in the first encounter you set foot to "x" Area(where they are supposed to appear).

Do you get Kagebou by breeding a Slime monsters with Watabou or Warubou?
Another question I have is, how do you get Darck in this Hack? Since you removed him as a Tinymedal monster reward.

I will post an update in the future with some HP tweaks. I thought the HP of the minions would help balance the difference but I guess not.

While feasible I wasn't able to find a way to change their sprites. These appear to be buried in map and event data. I tried a few methods to find it but wasn't successful :(.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the boss choices. I find it ridiculous to have these awesome bosses that aren't used. Same goes for rare monsters. They are found randomly in key worlds and I found this very sloppy. The original game is all over the place when it comes to the rarity of encountered monsters. One of the first Magic Keys I received has Roboster2, IceMan, LavaMan, CloudKing mixed in with all sorts of common monsters.

When my friend first played the game he quit the story at the Ice key to explore random key worlds. It wasn't long before he found keys with Rosevine, Jamirus and Durran and Divinegon. He was able to skip over most of the breeding. In order to make exploring the story keys worth while I wanted to create interesting monster regions.
My biggest complaint with the original game was that the story explores maybe 25% of the content and they left the random keys to do the rest.

There was a bug in the RNG that seems to make it so you encounter rare spawns (often two at once) the first time you enter an area. I've since post an update to get around that bug. I will make Sidoh and other catchable bosses require breeding and more meat to catch. This excludes Darck. You must catch him to obtain him in the tower of the Traveler key.

Kagebou? Woops its actually called PetitBou
Foohero x Darck = Warubou
Warubou x Slime (Monster) = Watabou
Slime (Family) x Watabou = PetitBou
Slime (Family) x Warubou = PetitBou

Petitbou is arguably the best monster in the game as it has great stats and the lowest xp requirements.

I just started this hack yesterday and completed the first world so far.

I like that larger encounters (2-3, 3 more common) are already more standard in the first world. In the original, it took more until the end of Pirate World/Ice World to see bigger encounters being standard.

The monster variety is through the roof! I even had to release some already because you don't start with a lot of room in the farm. A lot of very interesting enemies.

I like that Herbs heal 50-80 HP now, which is great as they're not hard to get (just run around Oasis World a bit, go back to GreatLog, and repeat), but they're very useful. At least for awhile, this should make it where it's not too necessary to have more than one monster with Heal.

I also see the OddBelt is purchaseable for 500G in one of the Oasis World towns, which is very nice, as some monsters have MP problems (BigEye is a notable one! Great skill set but he doesn't have much MP to work with) and 80MP solves that very well.

Overall I'm having a lot of fun so far. The random battles are pretty challenging which is a breath of fresh air.

Thanks for the feedback. :) I'm glad you like the enemy variety and difficulty.

Some of the things you mentioned were added in updates. I hope to get another update posted soon to increase the HP of some of the later bosses.
