I' m just approaching to the nds rom's translation but I'm having trouble finding the files that contain the texts and I hope you can help me (I hope I was not wrong posting in this section, in case, I apologize and I will move it to the right one). The game is Ace Attorney- Miles Edgeworth Investigation and following a guide I used DsLazy to manage the files in the Rom and MadEdit as Hex Editor to check them. All the files are .bin, no one seems suggest that conteins script or text ( they have short name) so I opened each one and the only thing I got is some random letters (except for just one file with one string sayng CAPCOM_CAPCOM_CAPCOM  ). The guide I was following suggest to use encoding setting Unicode-8 bit but I also tried to use the others available and all I've got is always the same random letters or sometimes kanjis. The rom I m using is (U) I tried to check if the rom was working and if the language was correct, and yes its in English. So I don't get if I m doing something wrong  . I hope you guys can help me. I could post some screen of the files if you need and if someone very kindly could explain to me how.
(I never tried to translate an nds rom but I decided to translate it from english to my first language and to give it a try considering that I have some knowledge of English, programming and I really like the Ace Attorney saga, that starting from this chapter has stopped being localized for my country  )

Did the people who made the English translation not make their tools available?  You would be far better off using those rather than starting from scratch.  Scripts are often compressed and looking at a compressed script with a hex editor is unlikely to get you anywhere.

I tried to use the program you suggest but I don't think the results can help me: it has opened the nds file how DsLazy would have done but instead af all .bin it recognized a large amount of files as system file and a single file called sound_data as "sound type" and the rest are .bin. Do you know what extension the file containing texts  should have? Or maybe am I using it wrong?
About the first question sadly in the .zip file containing the eng patch there is no traces of any tool useful to translate by my self aswell, but I noticed something. In the .zip file there s a txt file with instruciton and credits and the author of the project is Auryn. He s the same Auryn from this interesting discussion I ve found yesterday here on the forum:

I know from other discussions he worked with other people on that project for 3 years and they were the first one that have ever been successful in the translation of this game from japanese to eng (it is probably thanks to them and their work if I could play this game for the first time, and I am so full of gratitude ^_^).
Do you know if he has ever explained in some thread if he has used any particular tool or anything that could help me understand how to proceed? maybe you guys are more experienced in the forum and maybe you've already seen a thread like this.

Why don't you start looking at the .bin files and see if you can find something?

Your enthusiasm is nice, but have you not tried Googling at all..?  In fact, it looks like there's been some effort already to make an Italian translation.

About your question, I Googled already those Italian forum and I was already aware of their project but for what can be deduced from the forum and from the web pages created around the translations, these projects have been abandoned. Between 2010 and 2013, two different groups worked on two different projects for the same translation but it seems that a bit of competition, some internal problems have led both projects to die.
As you said, in this Italian forum is confirmed what is said in the French forum about the files called "overlays". In addition, by re-reading them there are interesting notions about how to interpret certain passages, something that could be useful for me.
Anyway, checking the bin files was the first thing I did, and now I m also focusing on those Overlay files. I opened them with the Hex editor and with Tinke but I could not get anything in particular. In Tinke I tried to open various files like Map, Tile, Compress, Txt, but I only got strings of black, colored pixels, or error messages from the program.

Regarding the Hex editor on the forum they said that initially they started to translate using the Hex editor but being laborious, with a programmer they developed a special tool to speed up the process, (the tool was not published but remained inside the translation group) . Even if it was laborious I would love to try, even with the hex editor if I could, but as I said in the first message I get lots of accented letters and nothing else and I do not understand if I have to change the encoding or something else.

In your first post you sayd that if I m looking at a compressed script I clearly got nothing but isn't DSLazy enough to extract files? Did you mean something else?
About the table you linked I've just started to study the Getting started section called Table and Text Editing on this forum for good, and I thank you for the link ^_^
