Final fantasy 3 nes hex editing question?

I have been trying recently to hex edit Final Fantasy 3 on the nes, more specifically trying to give the onion knight the magic command. I can give them the command but every time I try to use it in battle the game crashes. Does anybody know what the problem is and how to fix it?

did you only try on the first battle?
i was messing with this before for a randomizer and i remember it didnt crash if you dont try to use magic on the first battle or you may have to gain 1 level first then it doesnt crash.

that seems like it may have fixed it but i never got around to testing it
