Beginner Help with Editing GB Title Screen

Hi all

Apologies if this is a entry-level question but I'm very new to rom hacking and need some help

I'm creating a hack of Super Mario Land on the Gameboy and I'm able to successfully create levels using Land Forger and the hack is coming along nicely.
I've been trying to hack the title screen as well using GB Tile Editor but I'm struggling to understand how I change the copyright statement on the title screen. I've managed to change the Nintendo word by hacking the tiles but I cannot change the '1989' bit as the numbers seem to be generic number tiles in rom.
I've tried using a hex editor but couldn't find '1989' as a string in the rom.

Any ideas? I've noticed that other hackers have managed this but I'm not sure how!
