Merry Christmas!

This hack turns Super Mario Land 2, one of the best GameBoy platformers, into a fully colorized GameBoy Color game. Luigi has also been included as a playable character with his own physics.

It's been completely done in ASM so it works on real hardware. Additionally, this hack uses GBC's extra CPU, so all the slowdowns found in the original game are gone.

Whoa, this looks awesome.  Will give it a shot!

Wow this looks stunning. Will definitely play this sometime and write a review for it.

I actually saw an article on Ars Technica abou this at first.

It's really impressive: The original game struggled to run full speed at points, but utilizing the boosted clock speed of the GBC's CPU eliminates all of that. The tradeoff is that this actually makes some of those parts harder since you don't get the typical FPS drop to assist in dodging shit.

Luigi's physics are... bizarre, though. Definitely taking some getting used to playing as him. Other than that, the palette choices and such are very nice.Good work.

DrDimension

Aye, the physics are a bit weird for Luigi... Plus, there's the bug with switching to him in certain case.

Maybe the patch would be better to be split in two - one with the coloring, and then one with the coloring + Luigi?

Amazing work :D
I was a bit bummed how For Whom the Frog Bell Tolls was put on the back burner for this, but this will more than do. Thanks for the release :)

I haven't had any luck with this rom, using Gambatte on a Raspberry Pi 3.

I had to find the direct link from reddit because I couldn't get the patched one I made to work

Seem to have issues getting the 'macro zone' to work.  When i try to zone in, the game freezes.  It makes collecting all 6 golden coins impossible.  I've tried patching multiple versions of the rom, and I've tried everything except removing the header.
I would LOVE to give this a play through but I think I'll wait for a 1.1.

Make sure it's the (USA, Europe) rom and that you rename the file extention to .gbc

Bonkers!

Doesn't work with official VBA and VBA GX. It just crashes when you enter the Macro Zone.

That's an emulator issue, so the patch won't be updated to make up for it.

You have to use a more accurate emulator like mGBA, Gambatte or BGB.

Ah i see.  Thanks for the quick response.  It works great on mGBA and Gamatte like you said it would.

Great hack!! A+

Great hack, beat the game and loved it.

Now all that's left to colorize is Super Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.

d0pefish

i put this on my snes classic and beat it the other day. the only bug i noticed was in the sub level a few screens over from the secret exit there was these 2 random grey squares that seemed out of place. other than that it played great ( i didnt use luigi though)

Hi, I just wrote a review but I wanted to thank you again, you made one of my dreams come true with this color hack ! It's brilliant.

Are you planning on colorizing other GB games ? Which software did you use ?

togemet2

I'm a little late to the party, but I also would like to know how exactly this was achieved. It would be amazing to see other GameBoy games look this spectacular in color! Thank you so much for making this. As soon as I was sent it last month, I was in love.  ;D

I would like to know as well. I might be wrong but I think the following has been done :
Rom has been expanded and 8x8 tiles have been relocated somewhere else to allow to have more space and add palette information (in order to display them in color). Shouldn't be to hard for level tiles because there is a 8x8 tiles pointer in level header that can be easily updated. Now this is only in theory, in practice there is probably lots of ASM hacks to make this work.

Totally agree. This was one of my favorite game when I was a child. I would like to see it in color as well. I like it so much that I made an level editor for it (go to my profile for more info).

I am dreaming of an emulator that would allow to colorize GB games in a simple way. Something like this : you pause the emulation, you see BG map / 8x8 tiles / sprites and you can put color directly on it (eg : flood fill or by replacing any 4 gray color by RGB color). Then you resume emulation and the tiles are automatically put in color based on the rules you selected (like to colorize tile only if surrounded by some other tiles). In the end everything can be saved to a single file that you can distribute easily on the forums or romhacking.net.

Sure, it wouln't work on real hardware like GBC. But at least you could play it on PC. And later someone could make a real rom hack and reuse your colors :)

Actually this already exists (it's called GB Enhanced). But I find it cumbersome to use.
